The reluctant hireling is soon apprenticed to veteran salesman Tommy Rag (Timothy Spall in a manic, over-the-top performance), whose sleazy tactics and all-consuming ambition further aggravate Pete's inner turmoil. Boyle's character study of working-class angst and desperation is brought to life by Jim Cartwright's witty screenplay and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle's dizzying digital camerawork, which adds a pitch-perfect sense of unease to the already queasy proceedings.
