When a wealthy Venetian merchant, called Volpone, tricks his acquaintances into thinking he's terminally ill, the greedy group quickly assembles, each hoping to be mentioned prominently in his will. Volpone abuses the would-be-heirs with the help of his servant Mosca, and even manages to con a gullible merchant into letting him sleep with his wife. The most outrageous deceit, however, unfolds when Volpone declares Mosca to be his sole heir, then fakes his own death in order to register the reactions of his victims. In a twist, the joke turns out to be on Volpone himself -- as the conniving Mosca, now legal heir to the fortune, puts his officially dead master out on the street. [More]
