As the twin revelations of a wonderfully unexpected pay-off prove, in the end there's no substitute for wit, invention and real, priceless humour.

When Jackie and Michael discover that someone in their town has won the national lottery, they intend to uncover the lucky individual and talk him into sharing the jackpot with them. Trouble arises when they discover it's good old Ned Devine, and no longer is he one of the living. The citizens must band together and fool the authorities into believing that Ned is still alive, in order for them to receive the money and share it amongst themselves. [More]

Reviews for Waking Ned Devine
Charming performances and easygoing humour are the strengths of Jones's enjoyable Oirish romp.
The beauty of this film is its simplicity. It's good old-fashioned story-telling, following the increasingly desperate attempts of a group of lovable rogues to fill their pockets.
It's worth seeing. Parts of it are truly moving, and one wildly comic moment with Michael on a motorbike will not be soon forgotten.
Jones could have done worse than to fashion this slight entertainment, but it's also clear that he could do much better.
Though it strives for broad humor, pushing cuteness and light irony, this bland 1998 movie isn't exactly a comedy.
The film is tediously slow. The actors seem to pause too long between lines and the storytelling is far too smooth.
Gentle in most of its humor, but also has just enough edge and bite to keep it from being gaggingly gooey.
Like the hit movie The Full Monty, this British import has its funny shots of naked men.
There's plenty of enjoyment to be found here, whether it be the humor, the honest performances, or just the sheer beauty. And I have to admit, it put me in the mood for a pint.
