From producer Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) and director Rob VanAlkemade, “What Would Jesus Buy?” examines the commercialization of Christmas in America while following Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir on a cross-country mission to save Christmas from the Shopocalypse (the end of humankind from consumerism, over-consumption and the fires of eternal debt.) The film also delves into issues such as the role sweatshops play in America’s mass consumerism and Big-Box Culture. From the humble beginnings of preaching at his portable pulpit on New York City subways, to having a congregation of thousands – Bill Talen (aka Rev. Billy) has become the leader of not just a church, but a national movement. Rev. Billy’s epic journey takes us to chilling exorcisms at Wal-Mart headquarters, to retail interventions at the Mall of America, and all the way to the Promised Land on Christmas Day. The Stop Shopping mission reminds us that even though we may be “hypnotized and consumerized,” we still have a chance to save ourselves this Christmas. --© Official Site [More]

Part horror movie, part agitprop theater, What Would Jesus Buy? is a documentary on a mission.

The passion that is evident in the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir is contagious and admirable. Many Christian churches could learn a few things from this secular outfit.

You know that deflated feeling you get after you've spent a lot of time and money shopping -- and have little to show for your efforts? This disappointing biography, about performance artist Reverend Billy, does an awfully good job recreating it.

Not bad for a fake preacher.

At the very least, the documentary What Would Jesus Buy? might make a viewer think twice about that next purchase at the Gap.

A comical cry in the silent night against, as George Burns’ old song put it, the trend towards using people and loving things – instead of using things and loving people.

Rob Van Alkemade's hilarious, eye-opening documentary What Would Jesus Buy provides a simple and surprisingly powerful directive to the American people: Stop Shopping.

What Would Jesus Buy? is one of those all-too-common issue-docs that's so clear about its point that it's practically pointless.

With a provocative title clearly designed to get viewers' attention, it's disappointing that [the movie] doesn't actually have much to say.

This Rob VanAlkemade film has a good title and no focus.

This isn't just an easy shot at consumerism, it becomes, instead, an incisive look at the cognitive disconnect of the public at large, that hates the stress, emotional and financial, of the holidays, but nonetheless whole-heartedly joins in the mayhem
