(Livingston - EDTV) aspire to be great documentary filmmakers--however, in the wake of their failed debut WATER IN THE APPLE, about New York's water system, they are having trouble getting anyone in the film industry to take them seriously. Determined to make it, they begin working on their next project, a sure-fire winner about private detectives in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, their poor instincts lead them to choose Joe Boone (Ferrer - TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME)--a bumbling detective who can't seem to find his way around the city, let alone solve any cases--as their subject. With the cameras rolling, the incompetent detective takes the would-be filmmakers on a bumbling, wild goose chase throughout Los Angeles in this offbeat, "reel-life" mockumentary. [More]

For all the cleverness in its premise, director-co-scripter Daniel Pyne doesn't mine it for all of its potential.

Well, wherever he is, he's certainly not appearing in this lame satire of '30s and '40s hard-boiled noir -- that's for damn sure.

Where's Marlowe? was expanded from a TV pilot produced for ABC. Small wonder it never found its way on the air.

Successful screen humor comes from witty spins on the believable, not wheezing broad stabs like this.

If it had a livelier pace and more believable acting by secondary characters ... Where's Marlowe? would be a big treat for audiences seeking a hip comedy.
