The whole mildly pleasant outing -- the R rating is for brief nudity and a grisly corpse -- remains aloft not on its own self-referential hot air, but on the inspired performance of Tim Allen.

While in prison, Trevor Finch (Christian Slater), an ex-convict specializing in identification falsification, meets a magician and jewel thief, Micah (Richard Dreyfuss). Together, they bust out and take on new identities, planning to dig up a pile of diamonds that Micah buried under a tree. Unfortunately, their plans are foiled when Finch chooses to use the name Cletis Tout. Cletis Tout was a journalist who sold the press incriminating pictures of a gangster murdering a prostitute. Now the mob is after Finch, thinking he's the real Tout. To make matters worse, Micah contacts his headstrong daughter Tess (Portia De Rossi), to help them find the diamonds. After Micah is knocked off by the mob, Finch and Tess embark on a journey to find the diamonds themselves, only to discover a low security prison surrounds the spot where the diamonds are buried. Putting a unique narrative spin on the film, WHO IS CLETIS TOUT? is told entirely in flashback as Critical Jim (Tim Allen), a hit man hired by the mob to kill Tout, holds Finch at gunpoint forcing him to describe his journey. Reviews for Who is Cletis Tout?
Who is the audience for Cletis Tout? Anybody who enjoys quirky, fun, popcorn movies with a touch of silliness and a little bloodshed.
It won't hold up over the long haul, but in the moment, Finch's tale provides the forgettable pleasures of a Saturday matinee.
Ver Wiel has concocted one of the most elaborately twisted, diverting caper films in years.
There's a sweetness to it that's disarming and diverting -- mostly thanks to performances of Slater, Richard Dreyfuss as his partner in crime, and Portia Di Rossi as Dreyfuss' daughter.
If you love movies, it's hard not to like Who Is Cletis Tout? or at least smile through it.
A gem of a romantic crime comedy that turns out to be clever, amusing and unpredictable.
Who Is Cletis Tout? won't change anybody's life, but it's a respectable B- movie -- airy, inconsequential and a little too cute at times, but fairly entertaining all the same.
Overall, Cletis Tout is a winning comedy that excites the imagination and tickles the funny bone.
Cletis is playful but highly studied and dependent for its success on a patient viewer.
There's skimpiness to the whole movie that undercuts its good effort at a modern-minded twist on high-style nostalgia.
This mistaken-identity picture is so film-culture referential that the final product is a ghost.
