When she returns, she and Giles find their feelings have cooled, which is perhaps for the best considering their class differences would prevent any possible marriage. Grace marries the haughty Dr. Fitzpiers, while peasant girl Marty pines after Giles. But as Giles grows lonely and Grace comes to dislike her new husband, the two are drawn back towards each other.
