Matthew Vaughn Quits "X-Men 3"
by Scott Weinberg | June 01, 2005

The Hollywood Reporter brings some rather annoying news for all you "X-Men" fans: Citing "personal reasons," filmmaker Matthew Vaughn has decided to step away from directing "X-Men 3." No word yet on how this sudden change will affect the start of production ... but Fox better find a good director, and fast!

Bryan Singer, director of the original "X-Men" as well as "X-Men 2," is currently working on WB's "Superman Returns" epic, so he's definitely out of the running. Mr. Vaughn has been credited with bringing actors like Vinnie Jones ("Snatch") and Kelsey Grammer ("Down Periscope") to the project, and he's presently turning a few arthouse heads with his directorial debut "Layer Cake." Rest assured that we'll bring you any fresh X-news as soon as we hear it.

Do we really another super-hero comic book adaptation out there? I am really getting tired of these cookie-cutter special effects movies going out... After one or two they are being to seem alike.

This Sucks
I was really excited about Matthew Vaughn working on this project.
What's the reasoning for his departure? Arad says, "it wasn't creative differences", but I wonder how much creative control Vaughn really had since Arad apparently doesn't plan on altering the schedule for shooting to start in about 2 months even though they have no director.

aw man
who's gonna take on X3 now? if Fox and Marvel aren't holding a grudge against Singer for doing Superman Returns, they should try getting him back. if not, who else is capable of doing a good X-Men movie? any suggestions? i vote Joss Whedon (if he isn't doing Wonder Woman yet).

oh man, i have a great idea!
Joel Shumacker should direct! (i couldn't really care less how to spell his name.) Then maybe he could make it super lame like he did the batman movies. Wolverine's yellow tights... here we come!

hardnipples (whatever happened to puck?)
i agree joel could really play up the homoerotic subcontent which went on between wolverine and colussus. he could even give them the super hard nipple effect.

if it's possible they should seriously just wait it out for singer, or joss whedon (who clearly has a handle on how to put together a good xmen story - check out his run on astonishing xmen)

maybe the guy who directed Dark City and I, Robot. Or the Fifth Element guy. Maybe anyone who directed any jack Ryan movies especially the guy who did Clear and Present Danger could be a good pick.

Luc Besson would be fucking amazing.

But I really think they should go after Singer.

You're crazy! Joel Schumacher's a complete maniac who turned Batman into a travesty of filmmaking! As someone who very much enjoyed the first two X-Men movies, I'd rather stick my foot in a bacon slicer than let Schumacher get his filthy claws on the franchise.

Doesn't bode well. If they don't push back the release date, there will be real trouble.

I think he might have been joking about Schumacher. And yes I agree with both of you that he wouldbe a terrible choice.

oh yes...
I was very much joking. The last two batman movies were the most horrible things i've ever seen. If JS were directing the next X-men movies, i think I might have to shoot myself in the face, pour lemon juice in the wound, then cap it all off by rolling around in maggots.

My bet is it goes to either Zak Penn or Dan Harris. Just an educated guess.

Personally ... I'd give David Fincher $10 million to do "X3." ;)

Why not have Stan Lee direct the film. He claims to have single-handedly created the whole Marvel Universe all by himself. Lets see what he could do.
