The Many Faces of Jack Black
We explore one of contemporary cinema's most memorable mugs.

Whether it expresses befuddlement, exuberance, or just plain goofiness, Jack Black's countenance is one of the most expressive and distinctive in contemporary movies. With Year One hitting theaters this week, we at RT thought it would be a good time to take a look at the many faces of Black.

Bob Roberts

Even in his debut movie role, the political satire Bob Roberts, Black had already perfected his patented mugging. And as with later roles, he played a young man who paid tribute to his musical heroes, in this case, the folk singing right-wing politician of the title.

High Fidelity

In High Fidelity, Black nearly stole the show as a vulgar, hyper-opinionated record store clerk. However, it was his relatively straightforward (but still plenty ribald) rendition of Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get it On" that brought this occasionally wistful meditation on modern love to a soaring and satisfying close.

Saving Silverman

Black and Steve Zahn will do anything to keep their best buddy from tying the knot in Saving Silverman. And by anything, we mean anything. Black's character, J.D., is motivated by a similar urge as many of the actor's other characters: to keep the band (in this case, a Neil Diamond tribute group) together at all costs.

Jack is a testament to true talent cloaked in the ideology of being ones self while defying creative constrictive stereo types, in this case the square peg Hollywood A lister.

I must be the only person who doesn't find Jack Black very special. In fact, I actually think his best work is in King Kong when he's held back. He actually worked really well for that character.

Where's his "I lucked into Hollywood" face?

Or perhaps his "I'm blowing a studio executive to keep my job" face?

you don't even know what you're talking about. there is a reason Jack Black has a job and that's the same reason people like Jim Carrey and others have jobs: he expresses his brand of humor in his own way and it's hilarious.

It's a small role, but I always loved him in The Jackal.

And yeah, Black isn't always that great. He's one of those comedians (like most comedians, really) that has a very particular brand of genius. It's up to the filmmakers to use him wisely.

I don't care for all of his movies, but is there anyone in hollywood who has as much fun as Jack Black while he's making movies and guest appearances?

Jack Black BIO:

Hairy fat hairball. Eyebrow arching specialist. Runs with his fists balled up close to his belly with chubby legs flapping. Does movies. Considered funny by those less-than-or-equal-to 30-years old.

It's pretty clear from how this article was written that the author was assigned a brief overview of Mr. Black's work, and that's what was given. Rotten Tomatoes, it's been a while since an article of yours has fallen to this level of writing. Try again next week.

Nice call on The Jackal. Sprawl Baby!!!

I agree he needs to be surrounded by people who know how to use his particular comedy, otherwise it can be a 'hit or miss' scenario.

That being said, he'll always have a special place in my movie-watching heart simply because he was in Airbourne. When's that coming to Blu-Ray?!?

Nacho Libre was terrible even as a B movie "comedy".

And Year One isnM't even out yet.

I would replace Nacho with King Kong and Year1 with Kung Fu Panda.

I've liked Jack Black in everything I've ever seen him in. I think he's a really funny dude.

If you look at the parts he's had over his career, I say he's a good versatile actor too.

Booo! on the RT Staff for not mentioning "The Holiday". And let's not forget his uncredited role in "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story". Hilarious!
