Sigourney Weaver Still Hopeful About Further Alien Adventures

IGNFF's Jeff Otto sat down for a chat with classy leading lady Sigourney Weaver, and since Jeff is a smart movie geek, he directed the conversation away from the "Imaginary Heroes" junket for a few minutes so the conversation could focus on potential "Alien" concepts: "Ridley Scott and I have talked about doing one more where we go back to the original planet and see what these creatures came out of. But, I think that it would be probably unlikely that a major studio would go for it, only because one of the lead characters would be a fifty-five-year-old woman...I'm not going to sit down and write the whole script. And I didn't rush to see 'Alien Vs. Predator', which looked kind of awful to me, like a video game. But I just hope that the Alien won. The Predator's such a stupid looking creature." we don't need another alien movie. i heard ressurection wasn't that great and AVP sucked big time. i think movie makers need to lay off the aliens and come up with something new. but then again this is hollywood, the land of rehashing the same thing over and over til our eyes and ears bleed.

Alien Resurrection should never have been made, it was a horrible movie and a shameless attempt to recreate Aliens. And as for AVP, being a fan of both the Alien and Predator movies, and a comic book collector, I've been waiting for this movie for over ten years. It was a pathetic movie.
So as for another Alien movie, I say don't bother given the recent additions to the franchise.

Maybe Weaver and Stone could co-star?

As for Weaver's age, it would be sort of an Old Mama vs Monster Mutha flick. I don't think it has ever been done before, has it?

If Scott were to direct, it would be like Thelma & Louise In Space.

What about old nasty Paul Verhoeven as director? With his penchant for nudity and sleaze, it could be a great sci fi trash fest.

Sure, Weaver hasn't been getting the best scripts offered her, but she is an outstanding actor. I have forgotten what happened at the end of Resurrection -- I've tried to forget all of it -- but isn't she part Alien now, herself? So, it would be a good story to have her return to that planet and reveal the origins of these critters...and maybe give them an actual name! I mean, of course it's an alien, so is E.T. and Predator! Can we come up with a better nomenclature, please? That should be the script's focus, the team returns to the planet -- with Ian Holme as a cyborg third generation from the one she fought with (time to address some unfinished business, etc.). Heck, have Lance Henrikson in there, too, and - and...hmmm, maybe Aunt Blabby's onto something, Verhoeven directs and there's this group sex thing, and-and...come on, think positive, this could go somewhere!

Works for me....if the movie begins with the Ripley character waking up from nightmares about prison planets and future clones. She then talks with her adopted daughter Newt, who is now in her 20's.

In other words....all the crap was just a dream. :)

Seeing as Ripley is now half human/half alien, wouldn't it just make sense for the alien part of her dna to take over and make her the new alien queen? just make the hybrid aliens look a hell of a lot fucking better than the down syndrome looking critter in alien ressurection. It looks like the franchise does have the support of its fanbase, based their solid openings. It's just that they always experience really huge dropoffs - usually in 60 percentile - meaning they're usually not good enough to attract an audience outside of their fanbase. Yeah, unless they're able to get either Ridley Scott or James Cameron, maybe they should let this franchise rest in peace. Actually, I thought Jonathan Mostow (T3, U-571, and Breakdown) did a great job with T3, maybe he should consider doing an Alien sequel too. He got Cameron's support for T3 - at least Cameron wasn't complaining about it like he did with the Alien sequels. I'm sure Cameron wouldn't mind if Mostow took a crack at it.

Ok, Enemy Mine plot. Ripley stranded on strange planet with Alien. They are forced to coexist to survive. The alien (hopefully named Georgette), explains why it's hard to be an alien with everyone trying to hunt you, or turn you into a weapon, or shoot you with a futuristic machinery. Ripley sympathizes with the alien and straddles the alien's face, which, of course, impregnates the alien. Their baby (Zammies), pops out the the alien's stomach with a human body, an alien head, and a vegetarian dispositon. He grows to be the alien that kills all the predators and gives public speeches about the benefits of not eating red meat. He converts the aliens, they become friends will all peoples and now you can do alien spin-off Christmas specials. Directed by Baz Luhrmann

sure, it could be good. but i mean, you guys aren't even thinking positively. harrison ford will always make a good Indy, and Sigourney Weaver will always make a good Ripley. age makes no difference. that's what's wrong with this entire idea. "she's too old" screw that. she's never too old. understanding the aliens by searching their origin is a great idea. maybe they were cross-bred (kind of like all those genetic mutation crap they do now) or maybe they evolved from some primordial goop or maybe...well whatever the case may be, sigourney is welcome back anytime.

One, I am not on crack. Two, my point was to show that while Sigourney Weaver may be a great Ripley, she would be a great Ripley in a movie that would be a great disaster. You can only milk something so long before it runs dry. Alien vs Predator was an attempt at a new angle, and if flopped hardcore. I love the Alien series, but what does it have left to offer? How could you possibly bring back the aliens to make them interesting? The only way I can possibly think of a positive would be to have Ripley play the role that some people in other posts have mentioned: she is on the side of the Aliens. How that would be at all meaningful and interesting is a stretch, and just how many times can you rebuild Bishop? There is no artistic motivation in it. It's a great way to lead in a video game or marketing plan, but that's about it. Even finding the origin or the alien home planet, what can you put in that movie that hasn't already been done?

And for the love of all that's holy, Scott may direct! That fact alone should ease your fears.
Furthermore, no, AVP did not "attempt a new angle" except on making more money. The "idea" behind that film was not artistic in nature, it was quite the opposite actually. They wanted to see how much of the lowest bidders they could pander to. This new film will not come from the same people. If it does, then bitch and mud sling.

I'm a major alien fan. I grew up watching the movies and blame the death of the movies on modern demands for movies. The problem with Alien Resurrection and AVP is that they have that slapstick comedy combined with action. This is about creating suspense and realism, not kill the alien and make a joke about it. The new film should be done by either Cameron or Scott since they have the best feel for making realistic films and not just spending money to make more money. We need a good, real, suspensful and most important of all, serious plot.

The age of Ripley isn't really important. I honestly think she's better older anyway. The idea of going back to the origin of the alien is what is needed. Alien 3 killed the series because it had already been done. One alien running around and killing everyone. Resurrection was better but was a little too hollywood for my taste and had that crummy modern jokes and action touch to it. AVP was just another fight and kill/action movie with slightly less joking around. My only appreciation of that movie was the starring female.

Everytime I see the first film I get overly excited trying to imagine what had happened before the Nostromo crew landed there. I want to know where the alien race came from and how the aliens infected their ship and caused them to be destroyed. It's that mystery that makes me love the movie. And the thought about where they would say the aliens originated from or how they came to be is just as exciting. The movie should be made, but with a real director, Weaver, and a serious cast focusing on making fans happy, not general public. It needs to be like the first two in mood and setting and not over done with computer generated film. Do notice that the best movies always show less of the creature and focus more on the emotion. Hence why the first and 2nd one are still brilliant.

By the way, the alien does have a name. It's called a zenomorph. Check the scene in Aliens when they are briefing on the Sulaco about what they are looking for and what happened in the previous movie to Ripley.

The movie has potential if done right. They should do something surprising. And even if Newt died in the series, they should bring her back as an older woman just to see if her scream is still so high pitched :)
