Are You Dreaming of (Another) "Black Christmas"?

The writing/producing/directing team of James Wong and Glen Morgan ("Final Destination," "Willard") has been commissioned to mount a remake of the 1974 cult classic "Black Christmas." Production is scheduled to begin this September, and producer Steve Hoban says "It's going to be a classic horror film, but it won't be a gorefest ... This is an era of paranoia, so I think the timing could be really good, because this is a film all about paranoia."The original "Black Christmas" was directed by Bob Clark ("Porky's," "A Christmas Story") and starred Keir Dullea ("2001: A Space Odyssey"), Olivia Hussey ("Romeo and Juliet") and Margot Kidder ("Superman").

I never have seen the original Black Christmas, but if it was directed by the man that brought us the legendary "Porky's" then it must be good. Who knows with all the remake craze going on this movie may pave the way for the inevitable Porky's remake.

If the remake is of a movie no one has ever heard of before, then hopefully they can make it better...but I doubt it, either way I'm sure schools of people will flock to see it on opening day to ensure it gets multiple sequels

It is rather dated, but if you like the genre, it's very good. Kind of a midway point between Dario Argento and John Carpenter doing Halloween. The killer, esp when he's on the phone, is very creepy. Margot Kidder is good too. I'd wait and watch it on Christmas eve, right before bedtime, to see it.

I never get scared, but somehow the original which I just saw 2 minutes ago in the dark (its also raining out) has made me scared of my upstairs and for a breif moment when my phone rang halfway through. I really hope they succeed in the remake because the first was awesome and terrifying.

I think the current trend of remakes/adaptions and sequels has a lot to do with the legal rammifications of writing an original script nowadays. See, there are a lot of "original" scripts floating around out there, but the studios are hesitant to sink any money into them because someone in the middle of nowhere could hear about the project in development and claim "well, that's identical to my idea" and sue the company. So they are going with market tested and tried and true material they can simply obtain the rights to and make.

I think the slew of remakes can be partially explained by the fact that a lot of these 60s and 70s horror movies had really strange distribution schemes and contracts which resulted in a lot of these fairly interesting horror movies languishing in scattershot distribution with no internet (obviously), no sophisicated pr campaigns... hollywood was not even sure it was going to survive during this time period. A lot of people involved in some of these horror films made little or no money and there were no video rights bargained for. A remake gives all these folks a chance to finally cash in on their masterpieces. Plus a remake always highlights the fact that the original was made in the first place, thereby giving the original work some more attention by the bigtime fans. I have not seen the original but I remember a still published in Famous Monsters of Filmland from Black Christmas that creeped the hell outta my then 8 year old mind. It was a still of a pretty girl tied to a chair with a clear plastic bag over her head, uhhhhhh......
