Wachowskis Tap Weaving for "Vendetta"

James Purefoy is out and Hugo Weaving is in, according to Variety. The movie in question is "V for Vendetta," which is a big-screen adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novel and stars Natalie Portman ("Closer"), John Hurt ("Alien"), and Stephen Fry ("Wilde").

No reason was given for Mr. Purefoy's ("A Knight's Tale") departure, but at least the Wachowski brothers (acting as writer/producers, not directors) snagged a fan-favorite for the mysterious role. Hugo Weaving is, of course, best known as Agent Smith in the "Matrix" movies and as Elrond the Very Wise Elf in "Lord of the Rings." "V for Vendetta," directed by first-timer James McTeigue, hits theaters on November 4th ... they hope.

Reloaded would have been good if they were more interested in subtext and weren't followed by a terrible conclusion. I have a feeling they could go either way as filmmakers: hacks if they keep up the pretentious b.s., successes if they keep to storytelling.

Keep in mind the Matrix was not their first film. They are also the sole writing credits on their acclaimed Bound.

If they just go for a basic adaption (but not copy), no pseudointellectual masturbation, it could be good.

They got their start in comic books, so that's a good sign. But I'd feel better if this was a British Production, maybe even BBC. Smells like it could be another Alan Moore disaster.
