Fonda & J. Lo Enjoy a "Monster" Weekend
by Scott Weinberg | May 16, 2005
Discuss Article
Despite total box office numbers being down (once again), that didn't stop the critically lambasted Jane Fonda/Jennifer Lopez comedy "Monster-in-Law" from grabbing the top spot with a better-than-expected haul of $24 million on 3,400 screens. Also debuting in fine financial form was the Will Ferrell sports comedy "Kicking & Screaming," which effortlessly earned second place with a tally of $20.8 million on approximately the same number of screens.

Knock $10 million off of #2 and you have the third place winner, Jet Li's "Unleashed," which made $10.5 million on just under 2,000 screens. Rounding out the top five were last weekend's "Kingdom of Heaven," which grossed $9.6 million (to bring its grand total to $35 million), and "Crash," which continues to do quiet-yet-strong business on less than 1,900 screens. The racially charged Lions Gate drama made $7.2 million, bringing its total to just under $20 million.

The final flick to make its debut this weekend was the long-delayed FBI thriller "Mindhunters," which debuted in 10th place and was able to gross only $2 million on 1,000 screens. This coming Thursday sees the release of a quiet little arthouse flick that just may be able to make some solid coin. It's called "Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith." You only have to see the tomatometer and notice the most critically lambasted movie of the week to have your # 1 box office movie in America... Instead of thinking that Americans don't go for quality, I prefer to think that they give a damn for what critics say and make up their own minds about what they want to see. Talk about looking to the bright side of things... ^_^

additionally..
i hope hollywood gives credit to jane fonda for pulling in this audience....this film has done much better numbers then any of j-lo's previous films (the last few which have flopped..and lets not forget her flop of an album)..

i do hope that with this (and barbara streisand's appereance in fockers) that hollywood will start making movies for people outside the 13-18 age range....

what am i talking about? hollywood aint that smart.

... did huge numbers too, and was aimed at the Boomers. Will Hollywood figure out what a huge audience they have in older demographics before theatres start closing with these overall dwindling ticket sales?

Those crazy old folks like to get out too, it seems.

Good point. They're an underserved demographic. Look at the Grumpy Old Men series.

The only good thing about these box office results was that Mindhunters bit the big one, and maybe now studio execs will finally figure out that Renny Harlin sucks!!!!

I'm still shocked by Kingdom of Heaven and Hitchhiker's Guide's numbers. I thought "Kindom" by just having Ridley Scott attached would guarantee $100 million, but it looks like it won't even come close to the century mark.
