The Smith Spouses Demolish the Weekend Box Office

The charismatic superstar pairing of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie kicked a whole lot of box office butt over the past weekend, raking in an extremely impressive $51.1 million from 3,400 theaters. Industry insiders were expecting a solid bow for the semi-romantic action comedy "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," but the movie blew right past the predictions, thanks to a multi-demographic concept, (very) high media visibility, lots of high-end action, and good old-fashioned sex appeal. (Word is that a sequel is presently being discussed.)

Coming in at the #2 spot is DreamWorks' animated comedy "Madagascar," which added another $17.1 million to its total tally ($128m). "Revenge of the Sith" slipped to the third spot with $14.9m, which brings its total up to an astronomical $332m, while fourth place went to Adam Sandler's "The Longest Yard." ($13.5m weekend / $118m total).

Debuting in fifth place was Robert Rodriguez's "The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl in 3-D," which netted a somewhat disappointing $12.5m -- and speaking of disappointments: Russell Crowe's "Cinderella Man" slipped to sixth place in only its second weekend by adding only $9.5m to its total domestic gross. A pair of other newcomers, "The Honeymooners" and "High Tension," didn't do so hot either, grossing $5.8m and $1.8m respectively.

One limited release title that's doing some rather strong business is Hayao Miyazaki's "Howl's Moving Castle," which grossed $401,000 in only 36 theaters, giving it a per-screen average second only to "Mr. & Mrs. Smith."

I thought the action sequences in 'Mr & Mrs' were some of the best I've seen - really well executed.

There's just too many movies coming out this year and I'm spending way too much money!! ARGHHH!!! Ah well... what can ya do? I'll still be in the line for Batman next week...

True, but last year we had "The Passion" in the 1st quarter. That one movie is exactly what's causing the consistent "dips" this year.

Well, that and "Shrek 2."

Yea it's definitely been a better year for movies so far this year than last and Mr. & Mrs. Smith had the good action sequences plus Brad Pitt got off some good one liners that cracked me up at times. Batman's definitely the next one to see.

in an age where summer films can gross 70, 80, 90, and 100 million dollars in its first weekend, 51.1 million bucks seems, well, paltry. making that much the first weekend out might have been a big deal in 1995, but time's have changed and 51.1 million seems rather unimpressive. it would have been something to see just how much this movie would have made the first week if Brad and Jen hadn't broken up "allegedly" because of Angelina.

Not many movies make over 40 million opening weekend...less than 15 have done it this year. Let alone 51 million...No it is a big hit, it actually the 6th largest opening in June Ever, so the comment that 51 million isnt impressive is stupid...

Well, that would depend on the film. If [i]Howl's Moving Castle[/i] earned a $51 mill opening, that would send a message to Hollywood about traditional animation's staying power. Whether they'd listen is anyone's guess.
