Brett Ratner to Direct Eddie Murphy/Chris Rock Heist Comedy
by Scott Weinberg | July 19, 2005
Discuss Article
Once he's done with Fox's "X-Men 3," director Brett Ratner will head over to Imagine Entertainment to helm a new buddy-heist-comedy starring Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock.

According to Variety, the as-yet-untitled project is being tailor-made for the comedians; Mr. Murphy told his old pal producer Brian Grazer that he wanted to work on a project with Mr. Rock, so screenwriters Adam Cooper & Bill Collage were enlisted to pen something worthwhile.

The writers will get to work on the screenplay while Ratner is directing "X-Men 3." The premise is fairly sketchy so far (two blue-collar pals set out to plan the perfect heist), but that's only because the script hasn't been written yet.

At least it's not like Cedric The Entertainer and Ice Cube. Murray and Rock have SOME credibility. All the same, this Ratner character is not winning me over.

why is everyone so upset about ratner these days? i enjoyed both rush hour movies, and i know i am not the only one. they were huge smash hits on top of that. xmen 3 cant all be bad, but if it is, this murphey/rock combo cant be bad either. ratner seems to be good at the buddy comedy genre.

give the dude a chance, people are treating this guy as if he's uwe boll

I'm with South_park. Give the guy a chance, it's not like anyone has seen X-Men 3 yet, so they don't really have anything to be bitchen about. I thought the Rush Hour films and After the Sunset were enjoyable. I don't know about a buddy heist film with Rock and Murphy though.

Everything I have seen recently with Murphy just makes me sad about how far he has fallen since his prime (Delirious and Raw). To think that someone with such modern potential like Chris Rock has already signed on worries me. Both about his career and film in general. However, I do agree with South_park in that people don't really give Ratner a chance, but theres nothing in his portfolio that suggests he could pull something like X-men off half as well as Singer. From watching the first two X-men films, you can see that Singer put work into understanding and becoming the characters. Ratner just seems like a cheap director that could be hired to roll out another cash grabbing sequel. Ratner can do comedy between two different characters well, but with X3 dealing with the dark phoenix storyline, lines between Wolverine and Cyclops would have to be kept to a minimum for the audience to take them seriously.

I'm not really talking in the context of X3, I am really just speaking in generals I don't like him. I think someone like Brett Ratner opitimises what is wrong with the world today, acheiving success by appealing to the lowest common denominator. That is really posters on site like this complain about, the fact that movies are dumbed down and hyped up to appeal to the masses and when a movie needs to be churned out on the production line using a well worn formula who do we get to direct it..............Brett fucking Ratner or the like.

What's wrong with appealing to the masses?

That cracks me up -- It's like people saying J-boy Depp is a sellout for doing Pirates OTC.... Perhaps he likes doing it. Perhaps he wants the money... Leave the man alone. And for those who say money can't buy happiness -- well, true as that may be, lack of money usually doesn't epitomize the land of Oz and a bunch of singing frickin' munchkins. Ok. Rant over.

this seems good. stop hating on eddie murphy(a com
this movie seems good. IT has a good combination - Murphy and Rock.Eddie murphy is still a good actor/comedian. Although he made a couple of bad movies(Pluto Nash, Holyman) he still has 10 times more successful movies than unsuccessful movies. If his movies aren't successful with critics, its still successful finacially. All eddie murphy pairings has been successful so why is this going to be different. Eddie revolutionized comedy with his successful stand up routines. Eddie is a fucking comic legend and all you haters i got two words: "fuck off" u dumb bitches.

I think rattner can handle character development. One of the things I liked about red dragon was that it really delved into the character of the serial killer, instead of using the killer as a backdrop like manhunter and silence of the lambs did. He really gave fiennes a chance to be that character, and the movie was much more interesting (in my view) than manhunter because of that. His relationship with the blind women was especially interesting. Yes they had great actors to play the roles, but it was his decision to focus in on those characters instead of just making a shot for shot remake of manhunter. I don't think he is nearly as talented as singer (and with the exception of the leadin actor, I am very excited that he is directing superman), but I do think that he can handle a character film, and I am still ver excited about x-men 3.

Who the hell cares if Murphy was a big influence in the past, if he simply JUST ISN'T FUNNY ANYMORE. Rock has had terrible success with movies until this summer, and even then, he was a suppoting character in one and a talking zebra in the other. Murphy's either fired off total bombs or total drivel aimed at kids lately. They're probably thinking this is Murphy's chance to show he can still be funny, but just like Steve Martin, he seems to have lost his touch. Rock's a funny guy still, but the man just can't act, and it's painful to seem him constricted by a PG-13 (which this movie will undoubtedly be) rating.

nigga pleez u stupid crtic
what the hell r u talking about eddie isn't funny anymore(u dumbass). Everseen Ispy? Or what about Shrek 2? or nutty professor 2? or Bowfinger? Eddie is playing it to the kids and making big ass money doing it. Shrek over 300 mil, dr. dolittle 2 about 112 mil, haunted mansion 75 mil, daddy day care 110 mil. Wow having chilidsh movies do make u rich doesn't it. If chris rock has been a total failure in movies, how come Head of State debuted at number 1 despite all the other movies have 2 times as much theatres as Head of State. Down to earth did good too(u dumbass) debuted with 20 mil and ended up wit over 68 million. N wait didn't he co-star in Lethal Weapon 4(which was a blockbuster hit). N if u doubt that he was in the movie then ur wrong cuz chris was in most of the movie being in the action with danny glover and mel gibson. r u one of those ebert and roper(aka fat fuck and groper) kind of people, they usually are stupid ass people who have no taste in good movies.

better be good
im sure the murphy and rock flick well be good only because thats bretts area. But, the movie im worried about is "X-men 3" if he fucks that up he should be fired as a director and put on welfare. All his cars and house should be repo'ed considering xmen got an 80% and X2 got an 87% X3 should at least get a 90 or above which isnt hard since spider-man 2 showed that it was possible so if that fuck doesnt get it right he should never be allowed to direct again.
