Keanu & Zeta to Head Lyne's Lana Turner Tale
by Scott Weinberg | August 25, 2005
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Catherine Zeta-Jones and Keanu Reeves are in talks to star in Adrian Lyne's as-yet-untitled biopic about the love affair between movie star Lana Turner and mob affiliate Johnny Stompanato ... at least that's what Variety is telling us.

WB hopes to get the project rolling early next year, contingent upon the actors' availability.

For those perhaps unfamiliar with the tale of Turner and Stompy, here's the scoop: The "drama chronicles the infamous Hollywood courtship between Johnny Stomp, a bodyguard and bagman for gangster Mickey Cohen, and movie star Turner. Their relationship ended when Turner's daughter, Cheryl Crane, stabbed Stompanato to death on April 4, 1958, in what was ruled justifiable homicide."

Director Adrian Lyne is best known for films like "Unfaithful," "Fatal Attraction," "Flashdance," "9 1/2 Weeks," "Indecent Proposal," and "Jacob's Ladder."

First let me say that I love love love Keanu...
...I'm the first to defend Keanu. I think he's great. But...he's playing an Italian mobster? Please...don't do it, Keanu! I love the guy and think he does a great job most of the time but he's got his limitations (as all actors do) and this would just be oh so wrong.

I don't think Zeta-Jones fit to play Lana cause she's tough image on screen, it's my opinion.

BAD CHOICES FOR THE LANA TURNER-JOHNNY STOMPANATO FILM
I was shocked and dissappointed at the news in Vairety as to who was being considered for the two lead roles in the Lana Turner-Johnny Stompanato mellodrama to be filmed soon. Catherine Zeta-Jones is totally wrong for the part. She is a brunette with a hard edge lacking in the natural blonde glamour and legendary diva status of Turner. Turner exuded class and a distinct style that Zeta-Jones could not duplicate. She has trouble walking in her TV commercials whereas Turner's entrances and walk were legendary. For the Lana Turner role I would heartily recommend the naturally beautiful and patrician Charlize Theron.

Johnny Stompanato was a handsome and macho Italian stud with a rough edge. Keanu Reeves just doesn't cut it in that visual and stylistic image. He doesn't look Italian or like a stud. He would be diisastrous in that part. I would recommed the very macho Latin hunk, Andy Garcia, who has played an Italian stud in the Godfather IIII trilogy. Theron and Garcia would be a match made in Heaven.

I disagree about the fact that Catherine Zeta Jones is a bad choice for Lana Turner. She is a great actress with a very lot of class, able to give to the role, with her strong natural glamour, good sense of all of the true feelings behind Lana Turner's charism; and please hair color can so easily be changed it is terrible foolish to mention it.
Charlize Theron could be great too, sure, but maybe she would need more acting work to give to this role its part of tragic.
Even if I am really keen on Keanu Reeves, I agree he might not be the best choice; but he is such a surprising actor that you can not tell if he will suit the role or not before you see how he acted it. He is handsome, and he can certainly be a macho. Will he, sounds more like a bet.
Anyway, I don't think the choices can be discussed, actors are made to act in any role. The good question is: are these actors up to make this film as important as it should be ? Regarding on their past roles, it seems like they are both huge enough.
On my opinion.
