on Nov 06 2005 01:22 PM Well... No. Ahhh.. Aeon Flux... So funny to see what has happened since it was first released on MTV's Liquid Television. Enough time has gone by so that a lot of younger people don't even know there was an original animated series :-D Consequently, most of those people are the ones who when they see it, say "It Sucks!" or "That's stupid" merely because they have been conditioned to what's currently hip or cool by the media during their lifetime which didn't include a lot of things, including the original Aeon Flux... However, that leads me to the movie. The movie looks horrid. I've seen the previews and all I can say is that it should of been called something else. Perhaps on it's own it would stand... maybe call it BREENWORLD or The Chronicles of Bregna or some offshoot but NOT Aeon Flux. Basically, the trailer shows that they did not capture the same vibe as the original. Most likely because Peter was out of the picture. The other problem is that they didn't use the original music composer (Drew Neumann) who IMHO, was as pivotal in creating AF as Peter was as music makes the visual and Drew's score was very unique to the visuals. Take that away and you have nothing but an MTV attempt to bilk $$$ out of people for the hope of reaching new fans who just mindless go see bad movies and old Aeon Flux fans who were large enough to make this into a movie yet most who have seen the trailers aren't going to touch this. So yea, I will watch it but I'll wait for the rental via NetFlix. DJ Bat Who worked doing sound on the first Aeon Flux ht (Reply to this) |

on Nov 06 2005 05:34 PM DJ Bat, posts like yours are curious to say the least. I haven't seen the movie, and I don't know how it is, but, for personal and professional inclination, I tend to think that what makes a movie good, or not, has to do with the script, the performances of the actors and the direction. The title doesn't enter into the equation, last time I checked. Yet, you seem to be willing to spit on the work of a director, actors, cinematographer, writers, producers, because of that. Forgive me for saying this, but you sure don't seem to be someone who gives a lot of respect to other artists and their work. Also, you're one of those who thinks that faithfulness is the only important thing in an adaptation. Wrong. I'm sorry. I just saw Rent. If you happen to watch it, you'll experience a very flawed, if mildly entertaining movie. Why? It's too faithful. It doesn't understand it's a movie, and not theatre. It doesn't want to change. It doesn't have legs strong enough to make it stand on its own. And that's what a movie has to do. It has to stand on its own. When I'm watching it, it has to work right away. If, in order to appreciate it, I have to compare it in my mind to something else, as a movie, it simply fails. And if it simply fails as a movie, it doesn't succeed at anything else. It's as simple as that. (Reply to this) |

on Nov 06 2005 06:37 PM i dont even know why u guys are argueing. the movie will most likely suck, it looks stupid. the reason people will see it is for charlize theron in tight suits (though i have to admitt she does look pretty damn hot in this movie) (Reply to this) |

on Nov 07 2005 04:53 AM Well, it's just that I'm assuming it's a common assumption to judge a movie AFTER one has seen it. When I look at this one's pedigree, I see a director who won at Sundance, and who's previous film, Girlfight, got 89% critical rating here at RT. I see a cast of Oscar winners, Oscar nominčes and Oscar contenders. The musicians who did the soundtrack, worked on a cult movie of German cinema called Run Lola Run, and the music sounds pretty good to me. So, I don't know, maybe the movie will be flawed, or bad, personally I have a very good feeling about it, but I'll wait to write my opinion until I see it. But one thing for sure, if it's going to be bad it won't be for the reason stated by DJ Bat, but because something in thre script or in the direction just doesn't work. One last thing; I saw two previews, and Peter Chung was interviewed about the movie in both of them, and he's got the DVD of the series linked to the release of the movie. I don't know, he seems to me pretty on board the whole project............. (Reply to this) |

on Nov 07 2005 09:47 AM The music for the movie is from Graeme Revell. I like it. I loved Drew Neumann oniric soundtrack, but I think the new music, especially the composition you hear in the various pages of the official site, works very well. I disagree on the movie being unfaithful. The inspiration from the cartoon is clear. In the various trailers and previews, I saw moments taken from different episodes. Gravity and A Last Time for Everything are the ones that comes immediately to the mind. That scene in which the camera follows the pill swallowed by Charlize/Aeon into her body, and as it spreads energy from inside of it, is clearly a nod to Gravity. The whole concept of Aeon being at the same time mortal enemy and lover of Trevor Goodchild is at the basis of the whole Aeon universe, and it's clearly there in the movie, as it is the Dystopian society concept. I find more similarities than differences, and I think anyone who truly know the series can clearly see it. (Reply to this) |

on Nov 07 2005 12:53 PM Anyone going to see it will have to post (in General Discussion, not here) whether a fly lands on Charlize's eye. That might be good for a download. ;) (Reply to this) |

on Nov 07 2005 02:46 PM In reply to this comment (#827472) I can reply to that now. Yes a fly does get captured by Charlize's eyelashes. The scene is shown in one of the previews. You can see it on www.apple.com, if you have Quicktime 7. From what I understand it's sort of a signature for the animation. (Reply to this) |

on Nov 07 2005 03:43 PM In reply to this comment (#827468) It always sends a cold shiver down my spine when people claim they know me based on one paragraph. Well enough to claim how I apparently act, feel or basically am overall as a human being when they don't even know me... Scary. Well let me just say if you honestly think I don't give respect to other artists, then it's painfully obvious you haven't one clue about who I am, who I know, who I've worked with and what I feel. What I said was that this movie looks horrid and never once did I say anything about how the artists involved were horrid. What I said and stand by is that it's farthest from the original vibe from the original Aeon Flux. Simply put because no one who worked on the original series is involved. Thus, by default, it's not Aeon Flux but a movie based on the title and the imagery and oh yea, MTV's rights. Also hey, I LOVE Graeme's music but last I heard it was some techno band doing the music. Graeme may be doing some incidental music but again, I've not heard that yet... but it's not the music synonamous with AF. And actually, if the music IS good, it WILL be because of the direction and the script, NOT because it was called AF... It's like buying Rocky Road ice cream and it's filled with chocolate sorbet, gummy bears and hard cheese - Hey, someone is bound to like it! (Reply to this) |
|
on Nov 07 2005 05:00 PM In reply to this comment (#827474) You didn't write that the artists were horrid? No........You only wrote that their work, which, incidentally, you haven't seen, is horrid. Now, have you checked on the vocabulary what the word "horrid" means? Yes, I agree, the music, whomever makes it (but actually Graeme Revell is now listed on the official site as the composer for the movie, so I was wrong about it) will be only as good as the way the director uses it in the film, and, yes, that won't depend on how the movie is called, I'm glad we agree on that. Now if you agree that a movie has to work on its own cinematic terms, whatever they are, in order to be good, we can say we agree almost on everything........ The whole concept that an adaptation is "horrid" unless the original artists who came up with the concept are involved is also funny............Hey, all upcoming Shakespeare movies, and all of the others ever made in the history of cinema, they're all "horrid" because William didn't have and won't have anything to do with the scripts.................Is that it? Because that's what you just said....... (Reply to this) |

on Nov 07 2005 05:27 PM Calm down why is everyone jumping to conclusions... this movie hasnt been released, screened, and there have been barely any trailers how do u know it will suck? If anything on paper this looks good, how many oscar nominees and winners are in this? do you really think charlize therone would sign on for this if the script sucked..then again hally berry did do catwoman...but on the bright side sharon stone isnt in this one so it has better luck right there. also dont forget this is Sophie Okenedo's follow up to Hotel Rwanda, which she got an oscar nom for and not to mention francis mcdormand, something must be good about this besides the wardrobe (Reply to this) |

on Nov 08 2005 03:21 AM YOU HYPOCRITES! sure its easy to critisize a film because everyone else is,. And sure if it does meet poor reviews upon its release this is somewhat justified. But which one of you can say that you wil see this movie and honestly hate it? Which one of you can say that you like only films that critics praise? Which one of you can say that you havent slipped into blockbuster and descreetly rented Batman and Robin before steeling away into the night and excorsizing your entire weeks worth of it? exactly...none. Laugh at me and bitch about me in your retarded little nerdy chat rooms all you want, but here is a list of my top ten films of all time: 10: Catwoman 9: Scream 8:House of wax (2005) 7: Charlie's Angels: Full throttle 6:Batman and Robin 5: Ghost world 4:Glen or Glenda 3:Mean Girls 2: The sweetest thing 1: The cat in the hat (Reply to this) |

on Nov 08 2005 07:30 AM Graeme Revell is listed as the composer of the original music for the film in the credits on the official site That site is amazing. The comic book is great, and there's an interactive option on it which allows you to actually choose sides on the war and pick which one to follow, either the Breen or the Monicans. This is an incredible nod to the series' ambiguity, and it's clearly something that will be in the movie as well. There are also two interviews with Peter Chung on the site, and tons of other stuff, like a game you can actually play while visiting it. It seems to me like they did one hell of job, and, like I said, the inspiration from the series is clear to see for everyone who actually knows it. (Reply to this) |

on Nov 08 2005 10:17 AM let get this straight first before i continue. I have never watched or heard about Aeon Flux before the movie was announced. But i must comment that the production values of the movie from the trailer seems pretty poor to me. I can pardon them for the poor 3D but already i am catching some sniffs of poor acting and a messed up storyline ( u can;t just release this movie for the Aeon FLux fanbase) . Eventhough some of the cast had won oscars before this, you must remember that their acting shecdules aren't in accordance to the movie releases. i doubt that they would be given much of a chance to think back on their oscar win and then make a personal conviction that they would never star in a potentially bad movie again. Considering that this project goes way back, is also so much of a probability that they were already contractually obligated to this project before they had ther hit. Feels like Equalibrium, the set looks like Equilibrium, the custome and cast look like they are from Equlibrium. The government look like an iteration of Equilibrium. Can;t believe Equilibrium have such an strong influence. Stubbornly unacknowledge by crtitcs. Same thing can be seen in V for Vendetta. Action looks better on Equilibrium, and the same can be said for theme, story, art direction, photography and philosophy. And there;s Christian Bale in Equilibrium.Only Aeon Flux got a way larger budget which enables it do conduct at least some eligible marketing. ( the only thing i saw at my place was a trailer on TechTV and only once. It made such a huge impact that it urged me to actively pursue a screening.) If Aeon FLux get a better rating then Equilibrium, it would prove that Equilibrium is really underappreciated and is condemned due to its low budget. ( it really amazing that u could do such a film with such a low budget, and still score a cult following---at least at where i am) (Reply to this) |

on Nov 08 2005 11:53 AM "If Aeon FLux get a better rating then Equilibrium, it would prove that Equilibrium is really underappreciated and is condemned due to its low budget." Or, more likely, it will just mean that Aeon Flux is a better movie....... You must be good. You can tell a hell of a lot of things from a trailer; how the thematics will be fleshed out, how the storyline will play, how the performance will be...........I'm of the school of thought that to have an opinion on any of those things one needs to watch the movie first. I also have a feeling that your opinion on the production values of Aeon, it's more influenced by the belief that a sci fi-futuristic thriller isn't supposed to look luminous. It doesnt' have to have bright colours. It has to be grey and metallic, full with saturated colours, crowded, possible rainy, and even when the sun is shining, is supposed to be dark. This is Ridley Scott's heritage from Alien and Blade Runner. I'm not criticizing it, but it's like a Dogma now with this genre. It seems to me that what they're trying to do with the movie (by the way the cinematographer Stuart Dryburgh also worked on Jane Campion's The Piano, so I'll be cautious with jusging the production values), is to recreate a, seemingly at least, human-friendly society. There are a lot of circular elements, figuratively, in the city. There's a lot of light. No harsh conflicts in its apperance. There's a bit of Oriental influence. No harsh colours. It looks like the perfect society. It might not be. Actually I'm perfectly sure it isn't. How, I don't know, because I haven't seen the movie, and I am not that familiar with the original series. But it's a place that indeed look like it wants to look. Serene. Even the jail. It's clean, transparent. No bars, and no darkness. But it's also a place where people can watch you, and keep you under control, anytime they feel like it. On Equilibrium: I didn't like it much. Wasn't that the movie in which nobody was suppoded to feel any emotions, but nobody told the actors because everybody was emoting?...........Anyway, Alan Moore's V for Vendetta predates it of quite some time, and I'm pretty sure that Peter Chung's Aeon Flux goes back to the beginning of the '90s. Also, have you ever heard of a little Francois Truffaut's movie, and a little Ray Bradbury's novel, called Farenheit 451? Or even of a little George Lucas' movie called THX 1138? Equilibrium is as derivative a sci-fi movie as they come. And I didn't even mention the Matrix-like trench coats....... ;) (Reply to this) |
