Jonze to Direct Some "Wild Things" for WB
by Scott Weinberg | January 09, 2006

Now here's a project that I can't wait to see happen! According to Variety, Warner Bros. has hired Spike Jonze ("Adaptation.") to direct a live-action (and inevitably CGI-laden) adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic kid's story "Where the Wild Things Are."

"Warner Bros. has acquired "Where the Wild Things Are" out of turnaround from Universal.

Adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic kid's book, which Spike Jonze will helm from a script he and novelist Dave Eggers penned, is expected to get under way late in the year.

Playtone's Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman are producing, along with Sendak and John Carls.

Figuring out a way to turn the 338-word "Wild Things" story into a movie has been a long process, with multiple helmers and writers weighing in. Details of the Jonze-Eggers version have been closely held, but pic will be a live-action feature that will likely require a sizable CGI budget.

Universal and Sendak did not see eye-to-eye on the concept, but the current vision of the pic has the strong support of Sendak, who told the New York Times in October, "I am in love with it. If Spike and Dave do not do this movie now, I would just as soon not see any version of it ever get made."

Wow, now there's a book I loved as a kid. I have a feeling it's going to be amazing... or suck so much.

Disney Version?
Years ago, I saw a Disney special in which they showed test snimation for "...Wild Things." I guess they gave up... How very exciting to hear that Spike will now be doing a live-action version. I can't wait to see it1

I've heard rumors of this for a long time, I hope that this is true and they start casting right away. I can hardly wait, I really like Jonze and wish that he would make more films. Adaptation was awsome.

Jonze was the perfect choice for directing the movie!

I hope they start making the movie soon.

Well, normally I'd be against a movie version of this classic book (I mean, what next, "Goodnight Moon"?), but... Spike Jonze?

Interesting...

its a 338 word story? well. i guess if anyone could do it, it would be this weirdo. but a lot of cgi? please don't...go to jim henson workshops or stop motion, probably fits the mood of this story better, no?

Wow, Hollywood sinks to new lows. This was a great kids book, for 5 year olds, but a full length movie? Imagination, Hollywood has not.
