SUNDANCE: "Darwin Awards," Bobcat's "Stay" Makes Sale
A few last-minute distribution deals were announced as Sundance wrapped up Saturday, as Finn Taylor's "The Darwin Awards" and Bobcat Goldthwait's "Stay" secured deals.
Somewhat of a critical disappointment thus far, "The Darwin Awards" garnered enough support with it's big name cast and commercial viability for distrib house Bauer Martinez to make an offer Thursday. "Darwin" boasts a cast that includes Winona Ryder, Joseph Fiennes, David Arquette, Tim Blake Nelson, Chris Penn and Wilmer Valderrama and follows two mismatched insurance investigators as they look for patterns among people who kill themselves in stupid ways.
Bobcat Goldthwait's randy comedy "Stay," which the weasely-voiced actor wrote and directed, has also been picked up by distribution partners Roadside Attractions and Samuel Goldwyn Films.
The twisted romantic comedy examines truthfulness in relationships as it follows a young woman engaged to be married, who comes clean about one deviant sexual impulse she'd had years earlier. The buzz on "Stay" is that the central secret is quite shockingly repulsive -- in one word (without spoiling it completely): bestiality.
