"Big Momma" Gets a Big Weekend
by Scott Weinberg | January 30, 2006
Discuss Article
Proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that there's nothing in the universe funnier than a desperate comedian in drag (preferably fat drag), "Big Momma's House 2" snagged the #1 spot at the weekend box office by tallying an estimated $28 million from 3,200 theaters. And yet everyone will complain when Fox announces the inevitable "Big Momma's House 3."

Clocking in at second place, with a surprisingly strong $14 million haul from 2,000 theaters, was the British family comedy "Nanny McPhee," starring Emma Thompson. Third place went to last week's #1 winner, the vampire vs. werwolf thriller "Underworld: Evolution," which added an additional $11 million to its $44 million coffin.

Another new arrival, the Disney military boxing drama romance amalgam "Annapolis," debuted in 1,600 theaters with a haul of $7.7 million, while the top five was rounded out by "Hoodwinked," the animated comedy that added another $7.3 million to its $37 million goodie basket.

Next Friday sees the release of two new studio flicks: Focus Features' rom-com "Something New" (1,100 theaters) and Screen Gems' horror remake "When a Stranger Calls" (2,600 theaters).

i can think of reasons why this movie got number 1, but none of them have to do with this being a good or even watchable movie

Reason #1 - Lots of people didn't have anything better to do than go see a subpar comedy about someone pretending to be fat. Kind of sad.

I think mostly HUGE Martin L. fans went to see this once or twice. It will drop big time next week for sure.

Sure his stand up is kind of funny, but from the movies I've seen him in, he isn't a very bankable actor. Don't most his movies bomb at about $30 or less mill? Besides 'Bad Boys' which wasn't all that great, what has he done to deserve these starring roles? Can someone explain it to me.....like I am a five year old?

I had a feeling that this would happen. "Big Momma" was the most mainstream movie released this week. Most people will turn their noses up at a creative spin on Mary Poppins, but they'll flock to a dumb comedy who's only really pull is "a guy dressed in drag."

I'm looking foreward to seeing "Nanny McPhee" and "Something New," once they come up to the tiny theater near my school, but I have a feeling "Big Momma" will remain at the top next week, either that or that Horror remake that's coming out which I might see just because a couple of my friends want to.

What other comedies were out? Last Holiday and Grandma's Boy?

People like funny movies. And when there's only one new one out, then it's pretty easy to pick.

UW evolutions hanging on strong, would have been bad if it dropped out the top 5, great action movie by the way, I just hope the Superman movie has fights as good as UW evo, probably not because Lex has no super powers.

I work at AMC and get free movies, and I still have no intention of seeing half the movies that do well at the box office. How did The Matador do so badly?!

I hate to tell you, but it wasn't necessarily black americans who made this movie huge. Especially for crap like this, I'll wait for at least the second weekend. Blame whitey for wanting a safe black comedy.

And Fun with Dick & Jane didn't make $103 million, it cost that much. It's going to be the comedy version of Waterworld. Huge loss.

Well, before the first "Big Momma's House," which grossed about $120M, officially put him in the $20M per movie stratosphere, his previous films have been very profitable. They're generally cheap to make, and they make $40-60M. Blue Streak made about $70M, Nothing to Lose made about $45M. Bad Boys, Boomerang, and Life (all of which co-stars top billed actors) did pretty well too.

It was the double whammy of Blue Streak followed by Big Momma's House that really made Hollywood notice that he's actually one of the more bankable comedians.

I agree with you on "blaming whitey". blame old white men greenlighting this piece of crap (which, by the way, i was the only white guy there...my girlfriend wanted to see it.), and blaming black people for paying money to see it...but $28 million? I don't see whitey factoring in those box office numbers...

I think that it's high time to make people pay for participating in crap like that. Not only should Martin Lawrence be made to apologize for make turd sandwhiches like that, but the director, screenwriters and producers should be tracked down and shot in the kneecap. And regarding the movie's target audience, if you bother to go see it, you'll see plenty of stupid teenagers. Yes people, the future leaders of our countries (note sarcasm). That this film didn't flop should tell you something about how many stupid people inhabit North America. I'd rather watch chimpanzees eating their own feces for an hour and a hlaf straight than Big Momma's House 2.
