Critical Consensus: "Something" Ain't Nothing, "Call" Is Not Screened
This week at the movies brings something new ("Something New") and something remade ("When a Stranger Calls"). What do the critics say?
Romantic comedy may be the trickiest genre to pull off, because chemistry between the leads is needed to offset what's often a standard storyline. And the scribes say "Something New" is pretty hit-or-miss. The plot involves a successful African American woman who is fulfilled professionally but not in her personal life, so she goes on a blind date with a guy who, unbeknownst to her, is white. Some critics say the film delivers on its title, offering a thoughtful, interesting take on interracial relationships, with solid performances by Sanaa Lathan and Simon Baker. But others say the film doesn't transcend its rom-com conventions. The film currently stands at 59 percent on the Tomatometer.
Everyone knows to call 911 in the case of an emergency. Everyone also knows that the studios think they've got a stinker on their hands when they don't screen a movie for critics. "When a Stranger Calls" was not screened for critics. Ring the alarm!
Recent Sanaa Lathan Movies:
------------------------------------
22% -- Alien vs. Predator (2004)
65% -- Out of Time (2003)
64% -- Brown Sugar (2002)
81% -- Love and Basketball (2000)
43% -- Catfish in Black Bean Sauce (2000)

on Feb 02 2006 10:49 PM When a stanger calls...nothing happens. Just saw Stranger...bored to tears. Nothing occurs during the entire run time of the film. There are so many bad red herrings you actually begin to wonder whether or not there's a killer at all. Dialogue is even worse. The girl has to get the killer to stay on the phone for a minute so the cops can trace him, he's about to hang up so she says (despite the fact she keeps pleading with him to stop calling) "wait don't go, I wanna talk, you called me so you must wanna talk too." Don't waste your time on this. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Feb 03 2006 05:11 AM Simon West?! To think i had big hopes for this guy back in '97 with CON AIR...so much for being the new Tony Scott. THE GENERAL'S DAUGHTER was actually a well thought mainstream thriller, that predates Travolta stinkers of the same ilk (BASIC anyone?), but after that TOMB RADIER crap and now this steaming pile, all hope is lost. on Feb 03 2006 06:46 AM the sad part about when a stranger calls is people will go see it cause it looks scary. my gf saw it, not knowing anything about the movie and not into horror films in general, thought they took the first 10 minutes of scream and made it into when a stranger calls. i'd go just to be an ass and shout at the screen, cause i know that this is gonna be one of those "don't go in there" type films. they can be fun in that frame of mind thomas of the living dead (Reply to this) |

on Feb 04 2006 10:44 AM "i'd go just to be an ass and shout at the screen" ...i HATE people like that. That's the main reason I hate going to the movies. Yay, spend 8 bucks to be an ass! You can do that at home for free. I am not defending When a Stranger Calls, I am defending the decline of the moviegoing experience due to jackasses who feel they can talk during movies as loud and as often as they want. Don't get me started on cell phones... ok, im done. haha (Reply to this) |

on Feb 04 2006 12:13 PM a bad movie can be a good experience with a funny crowd like the grudge. sub-par movie, but it was mad fun with shrieking girls and people saying "RUN BUFFY!" "watch out mr. miyagi!" *shrug* i wouldn't waste my money on this... (Reply to this) |

on Feb 04 2006 02:20 PM oddly enough, i had a terrible experience at first with The Grudge. We had a row of teenagers behind us that wouldn't shut up. So we left and traded our tickets for the next showing. Yeah, it was still sub-par, but I would like to see the movie in silence to judge that for myself. I MAY rent this movie, or wait until HBO or something, but it can't be as bad as The Fog remake, I got through about 20 minutes and had to stop the dvd. PG-13 horror movies...yeah (Reply to this) |

on Feb 04 2006 02:28 PM In reply to this comment (#830756) I completely agrees with you about not wanting to go to the theaters because of jerk-offs who seem to think the theater is their own private living room. I'll go further and say it should be completely legal to haul such jackasses out by the scruff of their neck and toss them. I'd pay an extra $5-$10 just to have bouncers at theaters to take care of such behavior. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Feb 04 2006 07:28 PM Holy crap... Looks like "When a Stranger Calls" will be a hit. It grossed $9.2M on Friday, which means it'll probably do around $25-27M over the weekend. (Reply to this) |
