Adam Sandler & Kevin James Cordially Invite You to Their Wedding
by Scott Weinberg | February 09, 2006
Blog Article | Discuss Article
The Hollywood Reporter brings news of a topical new comedy shtick from funnymen Adam Sandler and Kevin James. It's the sitcommy story of a pair of straight firemen who pose as gay lovers in order to get married and share the benefits of such a union.

"Adam Sandler and Kevin James are in negotiations to play firefighters who pretend to be a gay couple in Universal Pictures "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry."

"Wedding Crashers" helmer David Dobkin is attached to direct the long-gestating comedy ... The firefighters in "Chuck and Larry" pose as a married gay couple in order to receive domestic partner benefits. Alexander Payne and James Taylor, the Oscar-winning team behind "Sideways" and "About Schmidt," have written the current draft of the screenplay based on a treatment by Lew Gallo.

The coming together of Sandler and James finally puts the project, which has been at the studio since the late 1990s, on the runway. A parade of writers including Gary Ross, Jon Favreau and Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel has hammered out drafts over the years, and various combinations of actors such as Will Smith and Nicolas Cage, Smith and James Gandolfini and Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson have flirted with the movie."

--

Frankly I think it'd be a little more brave to have a comedy in which the characters are actually gay men who want to be married ... ha, like a studio would actually bankroll that concept.

Normally I'd snidely and snobbishly scoff at such a high-concept blueprint like this one, but with Dobkin, Payne, and Taylor aboard ... I'm more than prepared to see how this thing shakes out.

I didn't think Hollywood's gay theme would end so quickly.

Wow I never thought Sandler would do something so far outside of the box.

Sandler needs a hit badly. He hasn't done anything decent since Waterboy

50 First Dates-120 mil
Ange Mmanagment-135 mil
Big Daddy- 163 Mil
Longest Yard- 158 Mil

not too shabby if you ask me...

I completely agree with Weinberg's last sentence. I also think that Cage and Gandolfini would be interesting choices.

Because these films grossed a bunch of dough, that makes them good? That's a laugh. 50 First Dates was pretty good, but the rest of those you listed are total shit. I guess what I should have said was, he needs to make a movie that's actually funny.

yeah you should have been more specific. just because YOU dont think they're funny doesnt mean they're NOT a hit. hey dont get me wrong i personally havent cared for any of his comdies since wedding singer. i did however like punch drunk love and thought it was a good movie overall...and that was way after waterboy.

Not exactly original (two guys posing as gay has been done before, like in Happy, Texas or more recently the STV flick Strange Bedfellows, which had almost the same plot) but being from an acclaimed filmmaker makes this one sound more worthy. I'm definitely interested in it. Should be a good one. I am assuming it will be funny but in good taste. All we need is it to be a bunch of lame gay jokes. It better have a good heart. Though I do think it would be better if it was actually a comedy where they really were a gay couple instead of having to get people to see it by being like, "It's ok, the character's are just pretending to be a gay couple, they're not actually gay, so you can go see it."

since Waterboy?!

50 First Dates, Big Daddy (probably my Sandler fave), and "The Longest Yard" were all great! Mr. Deeds and Anger management were OK.

"The Longest Yard" sucked! It was funny how when Adam Sandler wasn't funny, they had to go and have Chris Rock come in and say some random racist joke the make the audience laughed. But hey, it worked. And I liked "Spanglish" and "Punch Drunk Love", Adam Sandler's dramatic movies. But "Anger Management" is his best comedy. It actually had some charecter development in it that I liked, between him and his wife.

OH YEA. And then, in "The Longest Yard", it went from comedy to drama when, effing Chris Rock died. Probably the best scene in the movie was when that happened, I was relieved.

How would that be funny? Sounds more like a dark comedy that would come on HBO Signature really late at night.

sounds good. And then i read that adam sandler was in it. The only reason his movies were good was cos of the costars,.

50first dates: Drew Barrimore is luminous and the film is treading water when she's off screen

Anger Management: Jack Nicholson- Need I say more?

chris rock dies in the longest yard? good thing i had no urge to see that...now chris rock, there's a guy who's a whole lot funnier than sandler but doesnt have anything close to the number of 'hits' sandler has...when it comes to staring in funny movies chris rock is terrrrrible...

I'm still trying to figure out what the "benefits" are this couple would supposedly be getting. Funny looks from their fellow firemen? Ridicule? Amendments to the constitution trying to keep it from happening? Wouldn't it make more sense for them to actually find women to marry? Hey, maybe at the end of the movie they realize they actually are gay. Not that, I'd pay to see.

I think that they mean insurence benefits and the likes. Hell, I know a straight couple that got married just for that reason.

Anyways I think that this could be one of those big dumb funny comedies that you either love or hate (kind of like ALL of Sandlers films.) I'm looking foreward to it. I hope it doesn't dissapoint me!
