It's been about eight days since we got our last piece of gossip on who might be playing The Joker in "Batman Begins Again," so why not head on over to IGN FilmForce for the latest piece of juicy hearsay. (And no, that's not the sequel's title. I just made it up.) Back to Article

Picture Agent Smith smirking while saying "Mr. Anderson" and then picture him as the Joker. Hugo Weaving fit perfectly with the look and cast of the current Batman movies.

i like the casting and i like a lot of your suggestions too.
it's a great role and jack nicholson owned it in the '89 flick.
even mark hamill has created his own joker and lest not forget ceasar romero...
this is a great role and anyone of these actor could do it justice.

personally, Buscemi i'd be most interested in what he coud do.

but weaving brings the sinister and deep and his voice is haunting.
he'll be perfect for it.

all in all, it seems there are MANY actors that would be good for the Joker. i just hope one of the speculated ones gets picked, and NOT someone from out of nowhere (like worst case scenario Adam Sandler gets cast, THAT would be from outta nowhere, not that that would be anyone in the running for it, you know what i mean)
Personally, I'm for Johnny Depp or Crispin Glover(although that guy weirds me out WAY too much) but Hugo would be good as well.

For the character of Batman to be fully realized you HAVE to bring Joker. They compliment each other and represent excellent psychological dichotomy.

Oh, and Jack's great in whatever he does, but I would have much preferred Burotn's first choice, Wilem Dafoe.

I can't deal with Hugo. It isn't that I don't like him, I do. It's just that any time he opens his mouth, I'm thinking, "Hello, Mr. Anderson." It takes me right out of the movie.

you need to expand your Hugo Weaving library...
See Pricilla: Queen of the Desert. If you can watch that movie and still thing "Hello Mr. Anderson" then you're a lost cause.

Cripsen (like many) was my first choice too. Despite the fact that he's out now doesn't mean that the Joker will suck. Hugo Weaving will do an excellent job if he gets the part, and I really hope he does... i'm a huge fan.

The other problem that most people have with comic book movies is that they assume that only one actor can play the character. That, or "holy crap, you can't remake the Tim Burton movies, they killed off the Joker." Let me remind you all of how received Christian Bale was after both Kilmer and Clooney (i'm sorry, while I pretend they don't exist, they sadly do.)
First of all, the biggest problem is that just because a movie is made with certain characters, doesn't mean that another one can't be made with the same characters. As long as the story is different, there's nothing wrong with that. How many comic books are there with both Batman and Joker? Shitloads... but they are mostly different stories, different battles, different circumstances.

Furthermore (yes, i busted out "furthermore"), Tim Burton's movies were good, but not true to anything. He made up the story with those characters, giving people what they wanted: a dark, gloomy batman. Thankfully it was a good movie. I agree with the post above that Nolan can do whatever he wants. He isn't going to make it campy cause that's not his style. (Scheumacher should be shot). Either way, as long as they don't cast adam sandler, i'm sure Nolan and company will make a good movie. I'll just hope that it's Hugo cause he rules!

Maybe this is petty of me, but I really want the next Batman movie to be a huge hit, especially in a financial sense. Casting a superstar (Nicholson) as Joker was, I think, probably the single hugest contributor to the first Batman's enormous box office success. I think casting Depp as Joker would be a great business move: he's popular, he'd do it well, and it's a role the whole world would want to see him in.

...that being said, I think Sam Rockwell would make a good Joker, too.;)

Let's look at the big picture. If they were trying just to add batman to the already exsisting series, they wouldnt use the Joker at all. I also agree that Jack did an amazing job in the first one. so... why not use an an unused character, like solom burgandy or the madd hatter? as for choosing a new one, Weaving all the way.

I originally thought the Joker tag at the end of "Batman Begins" was just a breezy reference, not a sign of things to come in future sequels. Now that it seems that way, I believe it's a very ballsy move that will pay off. There are a hundred actors who could be brilliant as The Joker, but keep this in mind: Did Nolan give much focus to the villains at all in "Begins?" Without spoiling anything, it's safe to say he gave them the short shrift, choosing instead to focus on building Batman's character and explaining his origins. In Burton's version, Joker danced off with the movie (to a Prince soundtrack, no less); it will be interesting to see how Nolan handles a villain who is so dynamic and memorable, when he has bigger things on his mind than letting an actor steal the show.

There shouldn't be any Joker in the sequel. Jack Nicholson already played him. Plus, it would ruin the realistic feeling of the movie. (Batman Begins was amazing because it didn't seem like a superhero movie!) There should be a different villian instead.

I'm not sure how well it would work, but have Mark Hamill do the voice and then someone else do the live action. They do dub voices sometimes in parts of movies because the voice sound didn't come out that well. Mark Hamill is THE voice of the Joker.

I like Hugo too. I can picture him with the make-up and he seems to fit.

The hero-centric approach of the first movie makes it hard to tell how Nolan is going to handle developing a character as rich as the Joker. It would be disastrous to underdevlop the Joker (us super-cool movie fans would never stop blasting him on our message board, proposing strikes of all his future films and such. You know we do it and yeah, its lame)... we've already seen Nolan botch Ra'as al Ghoul, a character with a whole lot more than the film's arc put forward.

If the series is going to continue to develop Batman (meaning that he will progress beyond being the obsessed vigilante we see at the end of Batman Begins) then a whole movie can't be dedicated to Joker. The old Batman series shows what happens when the main character is completely static while the villain du jour is glorified... films become tedious, gimicky, and strangely homoerotic.

This leads me to think that Joker needs to be in a couple of movies. He and Batman need to be devloped together, because comparisons between the two helps solidify their identity. Should the rest of Nolan's Batman films involve the Joker? I dunno. If they do then there is a constraint on how Batman can be written... and it would get boring. At a certain point Joker will need to die or at least go away for a while. They need to have a clear agenda of where they are going to take the character of the Joker, find a way to keep the character of Batman interesting, and use at least two films to talk about Batman vs. Joker to ensure that nothing (Gordon, Alfred's worries about Bruce, Bruce Wayne as a seperate character, whichever love interest you know they will throw in, harvey Dent, or any secondary villains) will come up short and inconsequential, like Katie Holmes' character who basically existed to spew out key nuggets of wisdom at various times. Hah, what a long post, I suck.

Glover was good, but i think WB is looking for a slightly bigger name, which is also why Mark Hamill wouldn't fit the bill either (not to mention that Hamill doesn't look the part very much either). i can definitely see Weaving as The Joker - the white face, the green hair, the maniacaly menacingl smile, i can totally picture Weaving as Joker. plus, we all know the guy can handle extremely physical roles and his Joker could actually give Bale's Batman a run for his money in a fight. Weaving is already very well known from Lord of the Rings, the Matrix, and V for Vendetta, but he's not on the type of Johnny Depp-type star level that would overshadow the other actors and end up getting top billing like how Jack got top billing in the '89 Batman. Weaving seems to be a perfect fit.

I trust Nolan to make the right decision. I mean, worst case scenario is if he picks Eddie Murphy or something, which I'll just get out of my head now.

What I'm concerned about is the make-up; in the first film, Nicholson, although perfect for the role, had make-up that was just too over-the-top. Granted it was probably Burton who decided it but I hope Nolan puts some human character to the make-up and it's application rather than just for show.
