"Fear Effect" Goes from Game to Movie

Mark A. Altman, producer of "The Specials" and both "House of the Dead" flicks, will bring the old PlayStation game "Fear Effect" into the multiplexes -- and it's a project he describes as "Mission: Impossible" meets "Silent Hill." Hm.

Says The Hollywood Reporter: "Mindfire Entertainment has announced its plans to turn the popular Eidos video game "Fear Effect" into a feature film, with director Stanley Tong in talks to helm the action picture. Mindfire CEO Mark A. Altman ("House of the Dead 2," "DOA: Dead or Alive") is set to produce with Mindfire chairman Mark Gottwald and senior vp business affairs Chuck Speed, based on a screenplay by Steve Kriozere. The film is being repped internationally by Yarek Danielak's Arsenal Pictures in Cannes. Altman described the movie as "Mission: Impossible" meets "Silent Hill," adding that the film will faithfully follow the story line of the original PlayStation game. It will be set 10 years in the future, however, rather than in the alternate world of the source material."

Stanley Tong's previous films include "Rumble in the Bronx," "Supercop 2," and ... "Mr. Magoo"?

When are they going to learn? Only 5, FIVE!!!, movies based on video games have ever made their money back in theaters. Why do they keep doing this to us? Nobody watches them. They need to re-invent them. Mortal Kombat was good. Resident Evil films are good. They need to re-invet them like Spider-Man and X-Men did for comic books. Looking back at that sentence, maybe they need to add "dashes" to the titles?
