Some Small "Superman" Sequel Stuff
by Scott Weinberg | June 28, 2006
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Today is the opening day for "Superman Returns," which can mean only one thing: Sequel Talk. Over the course of several cast & crew interviews, IGN FilmForce was able to collate a variety of sequel-centric responses, and the general concensus seems to be this: If Bryan Singer's on board, so is everybody else.

From IGNFF: "Brandon Routh: "You know we'll do as many as everyone wants to get together and do."

Kevin Spacey: "Well, I think they're probably gonna wait and see what happens. There's certainly discussion about doing a second one, and I would love to do a second one, if Bryan is at the helm.

Screenwriter Dan Harris: "If there is a sequel with Bryan involved we will do it."

--

Meanwhile the executives at WB are thinking "Hell yes, there'll be sequels. Someone get Brett Ratner on the phone!"

"Superman Returns" opens today. Enjoy.

Superman Forever
I think that should be the title. Followed by Superman and Robin. You know there is going to be a sequel. Whether it is next year, 2008, or 2015, Supes will be back. As for Brett Ratner, I don't blame him for the directing of X3, I blame Zak Penn for the writing.

the writing was awful and cannot be overlooked.
it felt like more of the same rather than something necessary to end the series.
blah.
ratner gets crap but there is only so much one can do with a shallow pool.

Saw Superman last night. Good movie. The only thing that bothers me is how powerful Superman is. It takes all the drama out of the conflict. I mean, when he can lift something as heavy as Long Island.....that is taking it a bit too far if you ask me.

yes, there will be a sequel. then, in pre-production of the third Superman movie, Singer will leave because he gets the chance to direct his other lifelong dream: Grease 3: The Next Generation

Ebert isn't the only critic out there.
If you remember, Ebert gave two stars to the first Spider-man film also. It still went on to become a huge money maker. The fans proved that his review does not make or break any movie. Superman will do decent business domestically, overseas, and on dvd.

Ebert is a little over hyped. I don't trust his opinion.

XXX: State of the Union, Birth, Rumor Has It, Derailed, Cheaper by the Dozen 1 and 2, Garfield 1 and 2, Glory Road, Last Holiday, Roll Bounce, Beauty Shop, Two Weeks Notice, Daredevil, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Waterworld, Replacement Killers, Gloria, Bewitched, Stepford Wives, Superman 3, Bridget Jones' Diary: Edge of Reason, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, The Associate (yes, with Whoopi), Excess Baggage, The Honeymooners, and Speed 2: Cruise Control.....All of these earned better ratings in Ebert's mind than Superman Returns. Please, for the love of God, make your own mind up and go see this movie. Don't let someone who thought Speed 2 was worthy of 3 stars influence your opinion.

In defense of Ebert, he has always stated that his star rating is irrelevant. He has also always said that if you don't actually read his reviews, you aren't really getting what Ebert thought of the film. Read his reviews and stop basing everything off the star rating system. Ebert hates that he has to use the stars anyways.

If Bryan Singer did Richard Donner proud, then Brett Ratner would do Richard Lester proud--by introducing slapstick comedy and sending the franchise into its death spiral.

Ok, but how can you possibly consider XXX: State of the Union a movie of better quality than Superman Returns. I understand his quarrels with the movie, but at least the movie has a sense of itself, a story it wants to tell, and characters it attempts to define. Are you saying that by reading the review of XXX, I'll find why it's a better quality movie than Superman Returns? I mean the guy is applauding unoriginal ideas, uninspired action sequences, and zero character development. This goes back to my previous point...Ebert wanted Superman Returns to be something else, something he envisioned. It didn't happen, and I think he based his review on what he was hoping for, not for the vision that Singer put on the screen.

This movie is right up there with Batman Begins. I hope to God that there is a sequel. I want to thank what Bryan Singer for another great movie. It was better than I hoped and I think one of the reasons is I didn't read any reviews. I read Enteretainment Weekly, check movies.com once a day and Rottentomatoes.com twice a day, but within the last week and a half I have been able to avoid Superman news, reviews, and info. It has paid off...Big Time! From here on out I a turning myself off to Pirates postings.

The thing about Ebert
I think Ebert is great. I listen to his reviews and immediately know that I'll generally enjoy movies he trashes and be bored with movies he gives approval ratings. He's the epitomy of what's wrong with some critics - they can't judge a movie based on entertainment potential. That's why almost every Adam Sandler movie ever made got shit on while it waltzed its way to a $150 million box office.
