Trailer Bulletin: Costner's "Guardian" and Tim Allen's "Zoom"
by Scott Weinberg | June 29, 2006
Blog Article | Discuss Article
A pair of upcoming movies have new trailers on the net. One's a family comedy about superheroic kids, and the other's about an aging Coast Guard trainer who has to deal with Ashton Kutcher. Neither look all that good.

First up is "Zoom," which is based on the comic book by Jason Lethcoe. It's about a team of superheroic youths who are enlisted (by Tim Allen, Chevy Chase, and Rip Torn) to save the world. Trailer right here. Release date August 11th.

Next up is Andrew Davis' "The Guardian," which stars Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher. (Picture "Annapolis" mixed with "The Perfect Storm.") This one opens on September 22nd. Here's the trailer.

Totally agree. I thought Galaxy Quest was going to suck but it was one of my favourite movies of the year. They walked the line between Star Trek parody and regular sci-fi pretty much perfectly.

The idea behind Zoom seems a little too much like Sky High to me.

NO NO NO NO NO!!!
See, I just KNEW there were gonna be comments like this!

Sigh, OK, a little history here. Zoom's Academy is based on a comic by Jason Lethcoe, which was originally published six years ago. If anything, Sky High is a take-off of that.

It didn't look great but I don't see why it won't score with the spy kids demo that's clearly what they're aiming for; if people liked that movie I don't see why there won't be people who like this one

ZOOM is pure ZZZZZZZ
Honestly, Tim Allen is turning into Chevy Chase, without the great movies behind him - with the exception of Galaxy Quest - and i agree there should be a sequel to that - it would be awesome. But instead, Tim Allen is coaxed into making (hold your breath) yet ANOTHER Santa Clause movie (ok, it does look somewhat funny, and martin short is in it as Jack Frost) (ugh).

Now on with ZOOM. Wtf. It looks like excrement. Its a Spy Kids, Sky High, Lava-Girl and Shark Boy - Rehash. *and neither of the forementioned movies were any good - and yes i gave Spy Kids a shot. Didnt appeal to me.

Tim Allen can do better. Perhaps he needs to team up with Chevy Chase and do one more National Lampoons Christmas Vacation or something? I don't know - just throwing it out there. lol.

WOW, so you mean Sky High is NOT an original idea???????

C'mon, the school for supers has been done to death. I do have to say though, that I'm sorry Zoom fans got stuck with Tim Allen, other than the already cited Galaxy Quest, he's been pullin' the old take the check and run for whatever piece of crap movie project his agent has told him about.

But c'mon his claim to fame is playing a not-so-funny, self-absorbed, handyman with a crummy little show. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Of COURSE the idea of a school for "gifted" youngsters isn't a new one. However, as stated in a lawsuit brought forth by 20th Century Fox and Marvel Enterprises against the release of Zoom's prior to the release of X-3, the similarities between the Zoom's Academy source material and the X-Men comic are not "strikingly similar."

But that's not the issue. As a advocate for comic creator rights, the reason the Sky High comparison bothers me is that Lethcoe WORKED for Disney while he was developing Zoom's Academy. Coincidence? Ask Disney's lawyers and then ask, with all previously intended sarcasm:

"WOW, so you mean Disney stole a successful idea from a former employee and, due to their near-infinite resources and influence, developed it first???????"

That being said, I refuse to advocate for Tim Allen.
