Early Reactions to "World Trade Center"
by Scott Weinberg | July 19, 2006
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Make a movie about 9/11 and you're bound to get people talking. Release two high-profile movies in the same year, and you're bound to get lots of comparisons. A handful of sites have seen the Oliver Stone's "World Trade Center" already, and here's a sampling of their thoughts...

From David Poland at Movie City News: "Even after seeing the powerful opening 25 minutes of the film from Cannes, I was not prepared for how the movie evolved into a story about individuals. Screenwriter Andrea Berloffand Oliver Stone, who must get a lot of credit for the text as so much of the film is visual, took the "Apollo 13" route. The event is historic. The people are human. And with due respect to that Oscar nominee, they did a much more profound and intense job here."

From Roger Friedman at Fox News: "But mostly Oliver Stone has made a wrenching, accurate account of a terrible tragedy seem personal and immediate. There's nothing exploitative here, just good, well-wrought drama."

From Harry Knowles at AICN: "I should warn you, this is an intensely emotional film. There are very few moments of levity. At its heart – it’s a story of wading through despair and putting your faith in people you can’t see or know are coming. About staying awake through pain, of facing and resolving that you’re going to die, to find yourself alive… again. Of how Viggo Mortensen quotes from G.I. JANE are the most useful phrases in the world, when buried beneath tons of rubble."

Oliver Stone's "World Trade Center" opens on August 9th.

you do realize that you posted after yourself, meaning you're pretty much calling yourself a cocksucker and a pedo?

i'll give it a chance. i didn't see the other 9/11 movie this year because there was a very similar looking television movie, so I am waiting for dvd.
But this one on the other hand interests me more. I believe there could be a best pic nod for this.

Wouldn't it be interesting though if BOTH 9/11 movies got nominated for Best Pic? Everyone would be talking as to which 9/11 movie is better, when really "Tenacious D in: The Pick Of Destiny" will win the Oscar for sure....anybody?

oliver stone
great film-maker, sometimes i don't like his methods. JFK is an extremely entertaining film, but so much of the movie is completely fictionalized.

That isn't to say that this is a bad thing, but when dealing with source material like JFK's assassination, many people have taken that movie to be historical dogma. I just hope he hasn't done the same with World Trade Center.

I'm glad to hear the positive new...I thought the trailer was really effective. Definitely looking forward to this one, and maybe it will reestablish Oliver Stone after the Alexander debacle.

capitalism vs. exploitation
there are two ways to look at this movie:

1) Capitalism: our country is a beacon of democracy and capitalism...it is only appropriate that someone (Stone and those funding) make money off of the tragedy.

2) Exploitation: This movie is exploiting those that died by trying to make a buck off of the curious and sympathetic to this event.

The only way I'd see this movie is if Stone and all those profitting off this movie donated 100% of profits to 9/11 charities.

And on a side note this video is about 9/11 and is scary: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1519312457137943386&q=loose+change

Rated PG-13
I'm surprised this movie's gonna be rated PG-13. Not only is it about 9/11, but it's directed by Oliver Stone. It may be a little hard to make a PG-13 version about the horrific events of that day. But we'll see how Oliver does, he needs a hit after "Alexander."

Sept. 11th still seems like yesterday to many people. Bringing those emotions back to the surface takes absolutely no skill, and manipulating those emotions to make money seems wrong to me.
