"Crank," Wicker Man," "Idiocracy" Won't Be Screened For Critics -- Guess The Tomatometer!
by Tim Ryan | August 30, 2006
Blog Article | Discuss Article
The studios have been hiding movies from those pesky scribes all year long, but this time they've outdone themselves. This week, three movies won't be screened before getting tossed into the theaters: Neil LaBute's remake of "The Wicker Man," starring Nicolas Cage; "Crank," another high-octane actioner starring Jason Statham; and Mike Judge's "Idiocracy," a "Futurama"-esque comedy starring Luke Wilson.

What's odd about this batch of unscreened films is that two of them are directed by established helmers. They include the generally blameless Judge, the man behind such beloved creations as "Beavis and Butthead" and "Office Space," and LaBute, whose filmography is a bit darker ("In the Company of Men," "Your Friends and Neighbors") but has never been uninteresting. Even stranger, "Idiocracy" is opening in limited release, but is bypassing the normal release pattern by playing outside of New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area.

No, these aren't the sad movie critics waiting in vain to see "The Wicker Man"....

So we're going to play that increasingly popular party game: Guess the Tomatometer! (If the studios continue to stop screening movies beforehand, GTT may replace the NFL and Nascar as one of the most popular games in America.) But we'll make it easier for you with some super unscientific calculations. The average Tomatometer of the movies not screened for critics is just under 15 percent; Basically, we've taken the average Tomatometer of unscreened films plus the average Tomatometer of the key participants' films divided by two. By factoring in the combined Tomatometers of LaBute, and stars Cage and Ellen Burstyn, we're guessing "The Wicker Man" will wind up around 42 percent. Utilizing Judge's and Wilson's Tomatometers, "Idiocracy" may wind up in the area of 38 percent. And since the directors of "Crank" are relative newcomers, we'll use Statham, Amy Smart, and Dwight Yoakam to guesstimate that "Crank" will end up around 32 percent. Feel free to knock as many points off as you feel is necessary.

...and no, this is not a metaphor for what the studios think those mean ol' critics will do to the opening weekend grosses.

For some reason I still have a good feeling behind all 3 of these movies. I think the Wicker Man and Crank might be avoiding screenings to make sure spoilers don't get out(similar to what they did with scream 2 and 3).

Oh boy do I enjoy this game.

Wicker Man- 38%
Crank- 31%
Idiocracy- 33%

And how I also enjoy how Snakes on a plane was the highest rated not screened film so far this year. That movie was a fun ride.

Maybe the criticts will have to get real jobs someday!

These movies come and go so fast who cares what a "pro" thinks anymore.

Almost every colleague of mine is willing to give Crank a shot, so I feel that Lionsgate might be selling themselves short on it, as New Line did with Snakes.

Crank - 53%
Idiocracy - 42%
Wicker Man - 31%

i live in holland and our country has the honour to have the premier of wickerman. that means that i just read the first review of the movie in a paper that is ussually kind on movies. the review has the titel: the wickerman a laughable horrorflop and is in no way positive about the movie. so i guess that the wickerman will get less then 20 %, crank on the other hand seems to be just for the fans (me too) so critics will rate it accordingly i think and it will be above 40 but below 55%, idiocracy i just don't know.

wickerman: 12%
crank: 44%
idiocracy: ??

I'm hoping that Crank will be good, it looks badass. I hated the original Wicker Man, and think the new one will be just as dull.

Crank- 60% (fingers crossed)
Wicker Man- 28%

I've never even hear of Idiocracy, so I'm basing this on faith that Mike Judge is brilliant.

Idiocracy- 68%

Well,
Scream 2 and 3 sucked, face it. (for that matter, Scream itself was overrated). I would estimate Wicker Man at 30% because it's obvious by the trailer that it's become just some other supernatural thriller, though I still plan to see it--there are glimpses in the trailer of Nicholas cage inside the Wicker Man, so somehow it ends the same way (I hope). I loved the original.

Idiocracy I haven't heard of, so I'll estimate 50%.{edit--it's a Mike Judge film, I guess his first since Office Space--I love his work. but it stars Luke Wilson, so the rating remains the same}

Crank looks just like the Transporter movies, the last of which was loathed. I'll estimate it at 25%

Neil Labute, why!!???
Neil Labut is one of my favorit writer-directors. If you haven't seen them yet, rent "In the Company of Men", "Your Friends and Nighbors", "The Shape of Things", and many other great films this guy has helmed. When I heard he was writing-directing a mainstream horror film, I got excited about it, and the preview looked promising. But now it has the gurenteed "bad movie" stamp of authentication for not being screened for critics. I predict a 38% and will probably just download the BitTorrent.

Critics
I personally don't believe any critics should be allowed to see a film, television show, etc until it is first shown. That's already done with plays and other live events and it should be with all other media. Why give them a heads-up? Let them see the flick or whatever whenever the rest of us see it. On another note, I'm looking forward to The Wicker Man and want to see how Cage's performance compares with Woodward's, in the original UK production.

It's kinda weird. "Crank" is getting really good buzz as far as I'm concerned (mostly 3 good reviews). "Idiocity," however, didn't have one trailer come out, so it seems like Mike Judge might be a little skeptical about his product. I dunno...
