Peter Jackson Eyes Next Fantasy Series “Temeraire”
Here's new fans of the "Temeraire" series will surely go apes over. The Hollywood Reporter brings news that "Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson has optioned the historical fantasy series "Temeraire." The series, written by Naomi Novik, is a re-imagining of the Napoleonic War fought with dragons. Think "Dragonriders of Pern" in the Napoleonic era. The story centers on a British navel captain named Will Laurence who discovers a dragon egg aboard a captured French ship and names it Temeraire.

Pondering if he'll have to fight dragons next...
Jackson is quotes saying, "'Temeraire' is a terrific meld of two genres that I particularly love -- fantasy and historical epic. I can't wait to see Napoleonic battles fought with a squadron of dragons."
Don't look to see the movie adaptation(s) anytime soon. Jackson is slated to direct Alice Sebold's "The Lovely Bones" in the second half of 2007. It is not known if Jackson will make just one or three movies
According to THR, Novik was a computer programmer who did work on "Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of the Unrentide" before writing her first "Temeraire" book in 2004.

on Sep 12 2006 11:34 AM He only optioned the book, the same way Spielberg optioned Memoirs of a Geshia before he passed it on. MGM will now decide if he gets The Hobbit, but I think that they're smart enough to reliase that The Hobbit without Peter Jackson would be a bigger flop than a Beatle renuion without John Lennon and George Harrison. on Sep 12 2006 01:49 PM hmmmm I'm thinking ok don't stone me and burn me at the stake everyone but can someone else do the hobbit? i really like Mike Newell from harry potter, and I really think Gore Verbinski can pull it off. Maybe even James Cameron, I know hes a sci fi guy but fantasy shouldn't be that far fetched. (Reply to this) |

on Sep 12 2006 04:47 PM Glad he's considering making another fantasy movie, but the premise of dragons fighting in Napoleonic wars sounds kind of lame to me. I'd much prefer The Hobbit. (Reply to this) |

on Sep 12 2006 05:34 PM It might just be me, but It appears like people want ol' PJ to make 'The Hobbit'. I personally don't care all that much, but I mean, isn't that Eragon movie coming out soon-and that's about dragons, right? Dragons have been done...technically The Hobbit has been done...wherever you look originality seems to have died...in Hollywood that is. But to the 'question' at hand, I'd say Peter Jackson needs to make The Hobbit; then he can make the Similarion (spelling might be wrong there heh), followed by every other J.R.R Tolkein book so he can be 'typecast' like Lucas ;) Oh wait, he did King Kong, right? Oh yeah, I saw that, and it was a great movie...guess he can't really be typecasted 'eh....well, then I guess The Hobbit is the best bet... (Reply to this) |
