Nick Nolte, Martin Short & More Sign On for "Spiderwick"
by Scott Weinberg | October 04, 2006
Discuss Article
Man, I have a lot of books to catch up on. Looks like Nick Nolte, Martin Short, Mary-Louise Parker, and Joan Plowright will be joining youngsters Freddie Highmore and Sarah Bolger in Mark Waters' adaptation of Holly Black & Tony DiTerlizzi's "The Spiderwick Chronicles." (Got all that?) Andrew McCarthy and Isabella Miko are also on board.

From The Hollywood Reporter: ""Spiderwick" is based on the best-selling books by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi and centers on twin brothers Jared and Simon who, along with their sister Mallory uncover a world of fairies and other creatures. Freddy Highmore already has been cast as the twins, and Sarah Bolger will play the sister.

Parker would play the kids' mother, worn out by her recent separation from her husband (McCarthy). Nolte and Short will lend their voices for a couple of otherworldly characters: Mulgrath, a shape-shifting evil lord trying to get his hands on the kids, and Thimbletack/Bogart, a small being that can either protect a household or mischievously throw it in disarray, respectively.

Plowright will play the kids' aunt who is deemed crazy because she can see the creatures and is put into an asylum. Miko will be the leader of the elves."

Enough with the fantasy series of books to movies. Ever since Harry Potter, studios have been forcing these down our throats. Does anyone remember Lemony Snicket? Didn't think so.

I half agree with you. They are just taking any fantasy book and making a movie out of it rather than looking if it will work. However as a big fatansy book fan there are so many out there that would be perfect for film - am so looking forward to Eragon as the books are fantastic. I dont think they should stop doing them - just need to be more selective.
