Gilliam and Depp are Absolutely Planning to Attack "Quixote" Again
by Scott Weinberg | October 05, 2006
Blog Article | Discuss Article
If you saw even 12 minutes of the rather excellent "Lost in La Mancha" documentary, then you know how many struggles Terry Gilliam suffered through in an effort to get his pet project made. (And it never came close to getting made, truth be told.) But the man is no quitter, and it certainly looks like he's still planning to get this dang flick made. And soon.

From IGN FilmForce: ""We're in the final stages of getting the rights to Quixote back," the director told IGN earlier today. "I mean, I've been hearing this for the past six months, and I'm getting a bit impatient. But when we get that back, that would be the thing I would just dive in [on]. First thing I would do is make one phone call: 'Johnny, when are you available?' And that would dictate when I do it."

The Johnny in question is, of course, Johnny Depp, the planned star of the first version of Quixote. Gilliam says that the actor is still onboard the film. "He's on, he's on," the director said, before adding with a laugh, "He's the man… I hope he's still my best friend!"

As for how much of the original version of Quixote can be used for this new production, the helmer believes that there's little chance of actual footage being recycled from that shoot."

great director, great actor, masterpiece of a story

I never got a chance to see "Lost in La Mancha", I will have to see it though as a lesson of what can go wrong for a filmaker. Is Depp playing Quixote though? he is a bit young

The documentary was a great example of the age-old saying, "When it rains, it pours." So many things went wrong, including freak storms, medical misfortunes, and casting discrepancies. I hope they have better luck this time around.

"In a village of La Mancha, the name of which I have no desire to call to mind, there lived not long since one of those gentlemen that keep a lance in the lance-rack, an old buckler, a lean hack, and a greyhound for coursing."

Ole...
