More Chances to Get "Lost in Space"?

My very first DVD player came with a free DVD: That "Lost in Space" flick with William Hurt, Heather Graham, and Matt LeBlanc. I gave the movie a spin, found myself strangely entertained by it (albeit not overwhelmingly so), and then promptly forgot all about it. But someone out there wants a few sequels already.

From Mania.com (and it's a user-submitted "scoop," so feel free to take it with a grain of salt): "What he (producer Mark Koch) would like to do, he said, is relaunch "Lost in Space" as a series of direct to video sequels - he mentioned the "Babylon 5" films as a good example - but still link it to the first movie, because regardless of what people thought of it, it still has its fans. He also said he likes Matt LeBlanc, and they discussed the possibility recently. He's apparently keen to play Don West again. He also said that there was talk of a new TV series at one stage, but he wouldn't of been involved."

Anyone out there see William Hurt signing on for a DTV sequel to "Lost in Space"? Well, I guess stranger things have happened. He was in that "Dune" cable flick.

forget the big budget special effects and whatnot, just cut to the chase and give everyone the only thing worth seeing about this - Lacey Chabert in a very, very tight jumpsuit.

I remember being extremely excited about the movie when it came out, and equally pissed off I spent money on a ticket when the show was over. Yeah, suckers like me spent money on opening weekend, but that's because we were sadly duped into thinking this would be a fun movie.

Something went terribly wrong - they had special effects, the original robot voice guy, and a pretty high end cast. Although, if the cast is miscast, it all falls apart, and aside from Oldman, I think that was the case. Most of the acting felt phoned in, but how else can it be performed if the writing and staging is horrible? Specifically, I can't think of a worse casting job than to put William Hurt in this movie. I'm not a big Hurt fan as it is (his dynamic range is about as wide as a Mini Cooper), but putting him in a Sci-Fi action flick (this or "Dune") was criminal.

Most of the blame must be put on the director and the writers. The director, Stephen Hopkins, should have been banned from film after turning in "Blown Away." Akiva Goldsman was given the writing credit, and "inconsistent" is a kind word when talking about his writing. He's pulled off the screenplays for "Cinderella Man" and "A Beautiful Mind" (both historical, both noted for the acting more than the script) while destroying our humanity with slime like "Badman & Robin" and "Batman Forever." He has a pretty good list of titles under his producing belt as well - not all good, but not all terrible; HOWEVER he's lost his mind and decided the world needs a "Conan" remake. So, coupled with the "Batman" terribleness, the sinking of "Poseidon" (he should have learned his remake lesson there), and nuking "Lost In Space" all those years ago, I vote him off the island and hope he doesn't return.

I actually liked the first one as a popcorn flick. By the end everything was over the top, but it left me entertained enough to hope for a sequel. I don't know if going straight to video with Matt LeBlanc though is the way I'd want to see it.

William Hurt showed versatility in The History of Violence. He was mesmerizing for his 10 minutes on screen.

All I expected when I saw this as a teen was a popcorn flick, and thats what I got. I liked the movie enough to go see another one should they release it on the big screen. I don't know if i'm too keen on this straight to dvd idea.

They should give Lost In Space the Battlestar Galactica treatment.

Hell, just have the Battlestar people do it.

And yeah, Lacey Chabert in the jumpsuit would be a prime marketing tool.

I actually don't consider Dark City an action Sci-Fi movie. I saw Dark City when it came out and thought it was a great flick that did not get the attention and box office returns it deserved. I would put Dark City in a different box because it is a different sort of movie than nearly all of Sci-Fi (part of what made it great). It is much more a psychological Sci-Fi thriller than an action movie, and Hurt played a noir sort of character. That's one of his fortes as was shown in his earlier work, Body Heat, which is yet another a lesser remake of a classic - "Double Indemnity". Why does Hollywood never tire of making remakes????!!! I guess it is because when something original comes along, like Dark City, it doesn't make money. Still, when I think of Dark City, I don't think of William Hurt.

The Bigger problem with Lost In Space came at the hands of writing off the robot. Warning Warning Danger Danger. You don't take the Robot and turn him into a trash can later in the movie like they did. Stupid move. The Robot is as key a figure to that franchise as any other. And get rid of the CGI monkey. William Hurt if used again needs to get more physical. Guy Williams was one tuff dude. Hey William take a look at the old films. Guy Williams would have kicked your ass. Matt Leblanc was good as Don. If you can't get Gary Oldman may I suggest Malcome McDowell ? Heather Graham well .... nuff said, but get rid of that Gothic looking Penny. Her and that CGI monkey. She was never a rebel. Will was the rebel. Leave it there. You don't need two. If the movie is tweeked just a little it could be on par with current sci-fi greats. This could become a great franchise once again.

Yeah, Hurt was pretty bad, but Picture Kevin Spacey or Sean Penn in the role and that'll be down right creepy LOL

I saw this movie during the opening weekend and felt ripped off. Still, if I had only payed matinee price I would have probably found it to be an okay popcorn flick. One thing that still puzzles me is the CG monkey-thing. It did nothing in the film, the CG for it was horrible by any standards, and it was annoying. All the acting in the movie was aweful except Oldman, who seemed like he knew it was a bad film and decided to just have a fun time with it.
