"Mr. & Mrs. Smith" Make the Leap to the Small Screen
by Scott Weinberg | January 02, 2007

Director Doug Liman and screenwriter Simon Kinberg are about to bring their "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" to network television -- only I wouldn't expect Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie to reprise their roles. (Funny but true: There was a "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" series a few years ago; it starred Scott Bakula and Maria Bello, and it went nowhere fast.)

From Variety: "As in the movie, ABC's "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" will revolve around two married assassins. Action will pick up about six months after the movie left off. "It's essentially 'Married ... With Children' with guns," Kinberg said. "The show takes all the marital issues a couple has and blows them up to action-genre size." (Full story here.)
--

The series was supposed to get rolling last year, but Liman and Kinberg have been hard at work on their "Jumper" flick. Mr. Kinberg promises that the series will be funnier than the movie ... but also darker, too. Interesting.

Anyone want to try casting this thing? My vote is ... some guy and Carla Gugino.

Carla Gugino is great, but is TV show poison isn't she? Maybe Jason Bateman could play Mr. Smith and really jinx the show to the status of "critically acclaimed, diehard cult fave, but ratings failure."

I would have loved for a sequel first before a TV show. Titled "Mr. and Mrs. Smith Go to Washington" based on the Mel Gibson / Homer Simpson remake of the old Jimmy Stewart movie. That would rule!

Weren't for that horribly ignorant depiction of Colombia, movie would've been... still bad. Yet not as catastrophic.

Well...I thought when they decided to make a Buffy the Vampire TV series it was going to be a joke, so I suppose I'll give this a shot. Could be good.

it will all depend on the writing staff. if you could get an Arrested Development caliber writing staff, then this could work out. with a King of Queens writing staff, it would burn to the ground faster than you can say 6 degrees.

Vanessa Angel + Kevin James + USA Network = GO TIME!

Oh wait, they are too busy planning another detective show with a quirky protagonist. Word it that this time it'll be a blind man whose seeing eye dog is the one who really is the one solving the crimes. It's gonna be called SPOT, and no, Tony Shalhoub will not be playing the dog. See Spot solve, between Monk and Psych, this spring on USA!

Although, Jason Bateman + Carla Gugino + Showtime might actually kind of rock...

Married....with Children, with guns...that sounds awesome (but let's be honest, this is going to be terrible....)

I just rented it to watch, now that it's became a cheap weekly rental. Biggest heap of rancid garbage I've seen for an action movie since Batman & Robin.

Naw, I'm usually pretty good at sniffing out crap. I thought I'd give this a try since I enjoyed The Bourne Identity. But phew, what a stinker.
