Rob Zombie Announces New Laurie Strode Casting...Via MySpace!

Ah, MySpace. Electronic land of underage networking, life-affirming friend counts, and...major motion picture casting announcements?

In the newest use of MySpace for movie marketing purposes, rocker-turned-director Rob Zombie has been doling out pieces of casting information for his upcoming horror sequel "Halloween" on the film's MySpace page. The latest bit, in case you're not one of the page's 39,789 friends, names 17-year-old Scout Taylor-Compton as the new Laurie Strode (AKA the Jamie Lee Curtis role from the original John Carpenter flick).

Who is Scout Taylor-Compton? You may remember her from such roles as Dean's precocious little sister on "Gilmore Girls," a high-school outcast in "Sleepover," a big sister on the Disney series "That's So Raven"…and that headline-grabbing few weeks in 2005 when she ran away from home, only to be found safe at a friend's house.

Taylor-Compton also appears in the recent Sundance child-abuse film, "An American Crime" (as one of Catherine Keener's misled children), which sets the stage darkly enough for her to play the muse of Mike Myers' obsessive rampage in Zombie's sure-to-revolt "Halloween" update.

In Zombie's "Halloween" prequel/remake (which will be the ninth in the series), the masked Myers is mistakenly released from a mental hospital after 17 years and comes looking for Laurie, killing what's sure to be many, many people along the way. Shooting was to begin yesterday, according to reports.

Zombie, meanwhile, has been leaving tantalizing posts just about every day regarding the rest of his cast (which includes wife Sheri Moon Zombie, Brad Dourif, Danny Trejo, Malcolm McDowell, William Forsythe, Ken Foree, Adrienne Barbeau, Clint Howard, Udo Kier), many of whom are playing characters that also appear in the original. Mike Myers, whose character development will ostensibly be the focus of the film (rather than the lives and deaths of supporting players, Zombie has said) will be played by -- drumroll please -- Tyler Mane (former pro WCW wrestler Big Sky best known as Sabretooth in "X-Men").

Mark your calendars for "Halloween"'s release on August 31, 2007.

sadly, it has been rumored that Zombie's Myers will actually talk. not only that, but Myers' motives for killing is that he was abused and picked on as a child. if that's true, then i'm already disappointed. Myers should never be explained and he should never talk, period.

I agree with that. I'm interested to see what Zombie will do because I like his style, but one of the great things about Myers was the fact that he was just this silent creepy kid who grew up into a silent creepy pyschopath adult. And I don't think Tyler Mane has been a very good actor up to this point. He'll be great killing people behind the mask, though I'm not too sure about how well he'll do with the character development. We'll see, though!

I don't get what the big deal is. People forget that it's Rob Zombie's Halloween. You don't want to see Myers talk? Don't see the film.

He's not touching the original, it will always be there for our enjoyement, so what's the point in bitching and moaning online?

I agree with your point totally. Come on guys do we really want another remake or do we want Rob to take the original route and bring something new to the table? Halloween is one of his favorite films as well as an established classic so it is natural that he wouldn't want to do a complete remake. What would be the point? Anyone remember the Psycho remake? Of course not. I think he has an all around excellent cast for an exploitation film and the potential for greatness is there in abundance. Aug 31 is my birthday so i am happy it starts on that day......what a present!

And your point is? Before we start pissing and moaning lets give the guy a chance. If Micheal Keaton can become Batman and do a good job why can't Sabretooth do the same for Micheal Myers? We also don't know for a fact yet that Myers will talk but if he does you can bet Rob would not let someone who he thought was a crappy actor play the part. You have to have a little confidence in Rob's abilities here. He knows what to do so lets let him do his job and we will all find out on Aug.31 how he fares. I have a feeling this is going to be one great film.

dude, we don't really want a scene-for-scene, shot-for-shot remake of the original. just don't change Michael Myers. don't make him some whiny little prick who kills because "Daddy didn't love me!" the only thing that has really kept the Halloween series alive bad sequel after bad sequel is Michael. his character appeals to so many people because his reasons and motives are unknown and borderline supernatural so the audience can fill in the blanks themselves. he's simply "evil" and should be left that way.

Zombie wants to "reimagine" the original film and add more depth? give us more of a reason why Dr. Loomis is obsessed with him. give us Loomis' history with Michael at Smith's Grove Sanitarium. there was a Halloween comic some years back that elaborated on Loomis' obsession with Michael, that's a good place to touch on in the film. just keep Michael the way he is - white mask, mechanic's coveralls, the creepy walk, just silent unexplained EVIL - and build around that.

Looking forward to seeing it. Rob's movies never disappoint. I'd love to see some collaboration however by using more rock/metal music from his own band, as well as bands like Scum of the Earth which features former members of Rob Zombie, Riggs and John Tempesta. They are perfect for horror movies, etc... and since they all come from Rob's camp, their music would fit perfectly. Also i think that the movie production companies need to do more promotion for his movies. It seems that they're never well promoted by the movie companies, i dunno. It's going to be interesting to see how this remake comes out, Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake was pretty cool so i hope this is an even better remake.

Well you know i saw the original at the theater back in 78 as well as all of the sequels so i am a die hard Micheal Myers fan myself but maybe a change is in order here just to keep us from having the feeling we have seen it all before. In 78 the indestructable killer was a novel idea and when he was gone at the end it freaked people out however we have been there done that so many times since that i think Rob is trying to put a more realistic spin on things. If you have ever seen the extended cut of Halloween with the scenes Carpenter filmed during the Halloween 2 production for addition in the television airing you get to see more of Micheal when he was younger and you even learn how he escapes which i thought was cool and now when i watch Halloween every year on Oct. 31 this is the version i watch because i like the fleshing out of the character as small a part as it actually is. The key word here is reimagining so im not expecting everything to be just like Carpenter's if it were what would be the point. I do however adree with you on certain things you said and i believe we will just have to keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best. I have every confidence in Rob and his casting so far is just totally awesome so i think we will have a great film here but only time will tell.
