Castellaneta Does Double Duty on "Simpsons Movie"
by Fred Topel | February 01, 2007
Discuss Article
Dan Castellaneta isn't just the voice of Homer Simpson. He also does characters like Barney, Krusty the Clown, Mayor Quimby, Groundskeeper Willie and many others. Bringing them all together for "The Simpsons Movie" has been a hard day's work for the voice actor.

"I do about eight to ten regular characters so I guess about 80% of it is me doing other voices," he said.

Also, he has a major film director supervising the film. "It's much more intense. We did very long record sessions and Jim [Brooks] was there to direct us. Jim was there at the very beginning when the show was airing and he directed a little bit, but for the most part it was directed by one of the writers. This time, Jim has been there along with Al and Matt to direct all of the voice sessions. It's been like working on a dramatic movie. Jim would stop the take and he'd say, 'Remember, you really want this to happen. You're really sad about this.' Whatever it is, 'Get this in your head how much you love Marge' and that kind of stuff."

Don't worry, you'll still recognize Homer. "It's basically the same as the television show. I just think some of the emotional levels that we reach in the film are not always what you get in a television show. We have reached moments like that in the television show but we really, really took a lot of takes to give it that visceral emotion besides all the really funny stuff."

To give you some perspective, Pixar voice actors do about five or six sessions over several years. "I can't even keep count. It could be upwards of 20 or more and there'll probably be more up until we open. We may be there behind the screen looping in the voices."

Honestly, I'm not really looking forward to this movie. The show is WAY past its prime and I wish Fox would just put the show out to pasture. What worries me is this movie is going to be polluted by all the bad stuff that is currently plaguing show. Excluding age, this would be stuff like silly storylines and over-reliance on guest vocals.

When he said it's just like the show...
Was he talking about the classic era of The Simpsons, or the crap era. Because if he's talking about the current POS episodes, then my worst fears are becoming more a reality each day.

The movie's looking like it'll be the final nail in the coffin for a once great show, rather than its savior. But hey, I got the first 8 seasons on dvd, and I'll always be able to enjoy the classic Simpsons whenever I want. So I'm happy :)

Come on!!!! The Simpsons is the greatest show of all time. Maybe over the years it has gone down is quality, but it's still better than 99 percent of what's out. You two guys are probably fans of THE WAR At HOME and TILL DEATH. You disgust me.

you have to admit that the simpsons has dropped in quality over the years. It is still a good show, but it isn't as good as it used to be.

As for pulling double duty, why not have a story about hank azaria, he does almost half the voices on the show.

So...I disgust you because I refuse to like an era of the Simpsons that's all slap stick, idiotic, and having "penis" as its own joke?! lol That's stupid. So just because it's titled "The Simpsons" we HAVE to like it whether it's well written or not?! Open your eyes, kid.

The Simpsons started out witty and clever, and it should've ended witty and clever. If the writer's last resort for humour was to basically copy what Family Guy had recently produced (at the time), then they should've ended the show on a high note and cancelled it. Not only will I forever hate Mike Scully for changing The Simpsons' humour from clever to idiotic, but the fact that the show has lawers and doctors writing for them rather than professionals just sickens me.

This begs the question, was it worth Matt Groening leaving the show and going to do Futurama at the sacrifice of this once great show's quality?

P.S. IMO, there hasn't been a decent sitcom on in many, many years. The Office is, IMO, as close to a decent sitcom that we're gonna get right now, and even I don't care for it that much.

"This begs the question, was it worth Matt Groening leaving the show and going to do Futurama at the sacrifice of this once great show's quality?" When he looks at his bank statments, yeah I say he thinks he made the right choice! But "The Simpsons" has not slipped at all! You people are straight nuts!

2 things. 1. the reason The Simpsons isn't as good as it used to be is because of the times. the simpsons is like SNL, it may be meh now but it'll return to glory very soon (actually im starting to see it now with this season). 2. why you gotta hate on The Office. It's the best show on TV. it's absolute genius and a huge step foward in american sitcoms. don't hate.

as for Dan Castellaneta, give a vacation after the movie is finished. lord knows he needs one.

Ididn't say The Office was horrible.
It has a few good laughs, but really isn't something I'd wait all week for. But I did say it was the best sitcom on tv, didn't I? :)

I think the Office is the best sitcom on television right now, and I love it.

But just for the record: "huge step foward in american sitcoms"..you do know this is a remake of a british sitcom of the same name right? And as much as I like Steve Carrell he doesn't come close to Ricky Gervais as the boss of the office.

Candyasses, all of you. The show has gone to hell, the jokes aren't funny, the guest stars are distracting and annoying and a cop-out for a solid script. The only reason you didn't like the older episodes is because you don't understand humor.

I can't wait for this movie. Even though the last four seasons have disapointed me, they have grown on me. Despite the slip in quality The Simpsons is a classic. In my opinion no show on tv (past, present, and most likely future) can touch The Simpsons in their prime (seasons 2- 9).

the standards have slippe d but by no means are they bad....i think this movie will redeem itself and brign the simpsons back up.
Any Ricky Gervais is the only person who can do The Office justice, have watched the American series and hasnt got the dryness and isnt as sardonic as the Uk ones...but hey...we know our homour!
