Mark Romanek to Direct New "Wolf Man"

We mentioned this story a while back, I believe, but now we have some solid progress, so here we go again: Universal is hot to remake "The Wolf Man," which would normally be pretty bad news. But based on the director, the screenwriter, and the lead actor they have lined up, you'll forgive me for being a little bit psyched.

Based on the classic 1941 chiller "The Wolf Man," the new movie will still be based in the original time frame (cool). Screenwriter on the scene in Andrew Kevin Walker, who, after writing "Seven," has a lifetime fan in yours truly. The just-named director is Mark Romanek, the music video maestro who also gave us "One Hour Photo" a few years back. And the leading man is Oscar winner Benicio Del Toro, who'll be playing the lycanthropically challenged Lawrence Talbot.

Universal looks to be moving full steam ahead on this project right now. Expect some more cast announcements soon -- and the movie by the middle of next year. (Or heck, why not October?)

Bring to WolfMan back
Not many (or any) really good werewolf pictures out there. Might as well go back to a classic.

Del Toro as a werewolf is awesome.

Niiiiiice! As far as the general opinion of remakes on RT, this may be one of those RARE exceptions! I absolutely loved One Hour Photo, the writing for Se7en was superb, and Benicio Del Toro is the shit. Very interested to see how this comes along....

I thought Dog Soldiers was good, althought that may be cause I like British films and got some of the humor. I've heard from several of my American friends that they didn't care for it.

Werewolves in movies?!?! I thought Hollywood outlawed that unless there were vampires too. You know, these are the kind of horror movies that I enjoy most. The ones about normal characters in extreme conditions. Del Toro will be more than awesome, I guarantee that. I haven't seen One Hour Photo so I can't really judge the direction, but the writer of Seven... cmon. I am also psyched.

That sucks that Romanek is directing, they were talking about having Guillermo Del Toro doing it before and that would have been way cooler. I'm still going to look foreward to this just not as much. Walker is a good writer who also did Sleepy Hollow, and Benicio should be an awesome Wolf Man.

Yeah, Dog Soldiers was pretty slick, though I like The Descent a bit more.

Dog Soldiers was awsome. I still think An American Werewolf in London is the best though. Did anyone see Full Moon High? I really liked it and I don't know why (drugs).

Benicio Del Tor is a good grizzly pick and Walker is good...just get Rick Baker (American Werewolf in London, Thriller, every other really good makeup effect of the past 20 years) to do makeup and it will be great...although i would have liked to see John Landis direct more horror movies...did anybody see his short "Deer Woman?"
