"Pirates of the Caribbean" Writer to "Try" to Pen a 3rd Sequel
by Scott Weinberg | February 13, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
With "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" only a few short months away, fans have started speculating about the possibility of a fourth "Pirates" adventure. Well, here's what screenwriter Terry Rossio has to say about that.

No, don't get excited or anything. According to Moviehole.net, Mr. Rossio delivered a fairly predictable statement: "It's like the fourth Indiana Jones picture. There are forces in play to make it happen, and forces in play to make it not happen. I think we will try to write a screenplay. I can't say if we'll be able to solve the challenge of making a good fourth film, or if our screenplay will be enough to get a film made."
---

Hmm. So Rossio (and regular screenwriting partner Ted Elliott; they also wrote "Aladdin," "Shrek," and "The Mask of Zorro") will "try" to pen a screenplay for a "Pirates 4," but since the director (and most of the leads, I assume) is only contracted for three movies, I'm thinking the project would just be too darn expensive. Between the actors and the effects, a fourth Pirate flick could cost half a billion dollars. Well, maybe not, but you get the point.

What say you, Pirate fans? Do you want the gang to quit after Part 3? Or should we see a few more sequels? How about, ugh, prequels?

CotBP and DMC were fun and I am not doubting At World's End will be the same kind of popcorn flick. If they can continue that for more, by all means I say. But let's not make it as sequel crazy as Police Academy and avoid the prequels, please...

Personally, I think they should stop. It's not a series I enjoy all that much. I'll see the third one (because the second movie was only half a movie) but beyond that, they'd lose me as an audience.

I like the series a lot, but I'm assuming the third movie is going to have some closure.

They should have quit after the first one- either that, or making a GOOD sequel. Dead Man's Chest sucked when compared to the original. The first film was the best summer film I have ever seen, and DMC never even came close. They pulled a Lucas by relying to much on visual effects to tell the story.

do a prequel, bring in some new characters. Bloom wont even want to do a fourth film anyways.

I'd watch a fourht instalment, but after perhaps five they have to call it a day. I love the Pirates series, DMC was really underrated in my opinion. But they do need to ditch some characters at the end of AWE, my suggestion is that Elizabeth and Will go off into the sunset, maybe leave Jack on the run from Norrington again or something like that. If the series goes on too long it'll lose its sense of fun.

if they are going to make a fourth one, a prequel is a much better idea than a sequel

Huge fan of the series . . . it would give some good closure to an amazing series . . . but if they do decide to do a fourth (which I will of course see) . . . they should do a prequal . . . it would elminate trying to bring back Bloom and Knightly who seem to be losing intreset anymore . . . show the past of CApt. Sparrow, some youth, and the mutiny of the Black Pearl . . . the whole story would be told then and we can all live more happier

I like the idea of a prequeal. You lose the less interesting characters (Bloom and Knightly), and get to see more of Captain Jack. It would be fun to see a Batman Begins style version of Pirates. A darker Jack Sparrow Pirating to become Captain of the Black Pearl. He is already something of an anti-hero.

As much as I love Pirates, I'm glad the artists are only willing to see if a 4th one will be good and not just bankable. I'd watch it anyways but it's great they'll only make it if it could be a good movie like the 1st two. I hate prequels though, they already have good exposition in Pirates, we don't need to see EVERYTHING. The 1st one is the 1st one, that's it.

I love this series, but I want them to stop unless they have a GREAT script. I'm quite happy with them stopping at 3. However, if they want to do another, I agree that I'd like to see a prequel. It would be fun to see Jack earlier on in the story, and they can end with him talking about searching for the Aztec gold which leads to the mutiny and the first movie...

I want to see if the third one is any good before yay or nay on a fourth. The second one was a stinker.

Kill it after the third. DMC didn't do anything for the series. So i'm hoping the third wraps it up, and is actually good. And i guess if they have to continue, only bring back Depp. He's really why people love these movies anyway.

A prequel might actually be better, we can see more Jack and not have the drag of Knightly and Bloom.

First of all they didn't work too hard on the story for the second film because compared to the 1st is wasn't that great. Second I like the fact they think a 4th film would be "too expensive" when they made like 1 billion dollars on the last one, both of those are poor excuses. You know if the 3rd rakes in another billion there will be another movie.

Deep is good, but is he good ithout a straight man? I'll be honest. There's still endless potential in future Pirates movies. Still, Knightley and Bloom carry the main story. The reason some people hated 2 was it tried to make Jack the main character, and Jack wasn't. he is best as a sideshow. The thing is, the main show isn't all that impressive, but too much sideshow doesn't do much for anything either. I think they need less Johnny, less Orlando, and less Kierra, and they need another actor in there who can carry their own and add some life into the ensemble. It needs to be a new person too. Not a person once dead who they conveniently bring back.

pirates 2 was awesome. Seriously. The locations were fun, the action enoyable, incredible special effects, and it never took itself too seriously. I don't get why some people seem to hate it soo much. As for a third sequel . . . I'd rather have a great trilogy than risk a crappy 4th movie . . . bad enough the matrix sequels tarnish the original.

How 'bout one of them trailers for the 3rd movie first? That would be nice. Were like 3 months from the release and we have little to get us excited about this film. I used to think of movies as a singular entity. These days it seems that so many great films are somewhat ruined by shotty sequels. No film is safe. Rumors of Ghostbusters, Gremlins.......come on do we need more? Yeah okay, maybe we want more, but seriously leave it alone. I'm going to chalk this one up as the new Matrix series.....First one = this was a shocking surprise, second one = well, yeah cuz they were high dude, third = So, the white program and the black program lived happily ever after? Cool, can I get my money back? Maybe the 3rd pirates will = The Revenge of the 50 foot Jar Jar Phantom Sith Clone. That would leave some room for a really great fourth film.

Dear heavens, no. A second movie was already going too far, and with a third one coming to putrefy the theaters, it's time the series was put down.
