J.J. Abrams to Produce AND Direct New "Trek"
We all kinda knew this was coming, didn't we? Although he's been attached as a producer for a few months, J.J. Abrams will also direct Paramount's next "Star Trek" permutation. Cool.
Apparently the plot WILL revolve around the younger versions of James T. Kirk and his pal Spock as they become friends at Starfleet Academy and head off on an adventure together. One can only assume that the rest of the "Trek" crew will also appear as younger folks.
So the deal is finally sealed; Abrams will be at the (younger) Enterprise helm, and I do believe he'll be working from a screenplay by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the guys who penned "The Island," "The Legend of Zorro," "Mission Impossible 3," and the upcoming "Transformers."

kidnova writes: on Feb 26 2007 05:56 AM Doomed to failure Am I the only one who things this is a colossully bad idea and that's it's doomed to bomb before it even goes into production? The Next Generation characters and other Trek spinoffs were successful because they created entirely new crews that were only tied to the original cast through the Trek universe. This film, however, is talking about taking some of the most iconic characters in TV/film history and recasting them with younger actors. It will alienate Trek's core fanbase and I seriously doubt if it will be very successful at attracting new fans. I hope I'm wrong, because Star Trek is one of those franchises like Bond that you hope will go on forever, but this seems like a desperate and ill-conceived move by the studio. (Reply to this) |

renny2077 writes: on Feb 26 2007 07:17 AM I'd prefer a story in the next-gen universe. But with JJ at the helm, maybe there's hope for this one. However,... 'Apparently the plot WILL revolve around the younger versions of James T. skasforfags writes: on Feb 26 2007 09:19 AM Star Trek fans will see this regardless, if only for the ability to post all the negatives in their forums. The rest of the world doesn't care about Star Trek anymore, but I guess a few folks may go "Kirk o rly?" and get a little curious. Aside from that, it'll bomb. (Reply to this) |

TomasSPAGHetti writes: on Feb 26 2007 12:50 PM Just look at the writers... The Island, MI3, Transformers... all masterpieces. This can't go wrong. And it's even better because it's a prequel. Not everyday you see one of those. At least not a bad one. (Reply to this) |

Oh Mission Impossible 3 did suck but if any of you know something about J.J Abrams, you know that he created LOST ( or the best show on television, Heroes, Prisonbreak is simple feces comapred to this extraordinary show). I'll give him a chance, he seems passionate about it, and if he has passion about something he can create something spectacular. (Reply to this) |

UselessRob writes: on Feb 26 2007 05:16 PM Trek hasn't been popular for a long time... I don't understand all this complaining. Trek has been dead for a long time. They ditched the Enterprise show (which was far superior to that Voyager nonsense) due to lack of interest. The last movie sold maybe 4 tickets worldwide. People have lost interest in it. The answer, and a way for Paramount to make big wads of cash, is to do another re-invention deal just like everyone else. Sequels, remakes and re-inventions seem to be the way to make easy cash. If they do it well it could go on to keep bringing in money for them, if not, you'd think they'd at least break even due to every old Trek fans curiosity. Can't lose. It's not about good or bad ideas or being true to Trek's history or whatever people are complaining about. It's about making money. (Reply to this) |

renny2077 writes: on Feb 26 2007 11:08 PM I was hoping JJ would come up with a whole new storyline for the Star Trek Universe with a whole new cast and crew that would transition to the small screen kinda like Stargate did. (Reply to this) |

High School With Money writes: on Feb 28 2007 01:34 PM As far as the writers go, Abrams would be better off adapting one of the plethora of Trek novels with Diane Duane or the like writing the script. Could it be worse than these flavor-of-the-month scribes? Remember people, Paramount has its sights set for that opening box office weekend, and with a big name cast, they just might get it. Especially from all the adamant doubters who remain curious to see the results. [i]J.J Abrams, you know that he created Co- [i] Tim Kring, guy. (Reply to this) |
