"Indy 4" Bits: Sequel Title and the Absence of Sallah
by Scott Weinberg | April 17, 2007
Discuss Article
Just a pair of "Indiana Jones 4" tidbits to pass along this Tuesday: An old "work in progress" title is being tossed around again -- and will Jones' loyal pal Sallah be absent from the archaeologist's fourth adventure?

"Indiana Jones and the City of the Gods" is what one source points to as the 'current' title for the long-awaited movie, but it's a title that's been mentioned before, and could definitely be dropped if Spielberg and Lucas come up with something better. So far the cast list includes Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett, Ray Winstone, and Shia LaBeouf.

In other (sadder) news, we're getting reports that "Indy 4" will be entirely Sallah-free, which kind of stinks because, hey, who doesn't love John Rhys-Davies? (I missed him in "Temple of Doom," that's for sure.) The actor indicates that producers were going "younger" this time around, and also that he's never been approached to work on the flick. Darn.

Yeah you're right, the title "City of God(s)" would never work.

How's this for a title: Indiana Jones and the Foutain of Youth. I'm still looking forward to the movie, even though Harrison is looking kind of old.

Sallah should be in the movie
John Rhys-Davies should be making a cameo, so much of the rest of the cast is gone, we need some continuity. Plus, look at how good he was in the LOTR movies. Come on Lucas, Spielberg, make it happen.

Bring Back Sallah!!
He's such a integral part to Indy lore. It will be a shame if he is no longer in the movie.
We have already lost the late great Denholm Elliott.

Come on guys and gals. We're not getting Marcus back either. No need to retread EVERYONE for this. If you get some people back, great, but new characters should be welcomed as long as they're not *ahem* anybody's son.

But as to the title, hmmm... conjurs images of cities of "fortune and glory." Now, what could possibly be there to finally pique Lucas' interest?

That title works, wouldn't mind it at all. But they should bring back Rhys-Davies.

Actually, I think that would be a great title: Indiana Jones and the Absense of Sallah.

But seriously, everybody remembers Sallah. Most people who know who John Rhys-Davies is, know him because he was Sallah. Maybe they don't remember his name, and maybe they don't remember Sallah's name, but they see his face and say, "I know him, he was in Indiana Jones."

Look, I'm not saying he should be in every Jones movie, but if this one is sort of a "last hurrah," then Sallah ought to be there. I point out that Rhys-Davies, Denholm Elliot, and Harrison Ford, of course, are the only actors to appear in more than one installment. In my book, that makes him at least important enough for a cameo.

The Ravages of Time was a much cooler title. I guess that was another screenplay, though.

Are we getting Brody, at least?

Brody has sadly passed on as has been mentioned in previous posts.

One of my favorite things about Sallah's character is his undying loyalty to Indy. It just wouldn't seem right without his true friend at his side, if this is really the last movie in the series. John Rhys-Davies is a very talented performer and deserves respect enough to be included in the film in some capacity.
