Church Puts Sandman's Kills Into Perspective

Like most "Spider-Man" villains, Sandman isn't all bad. He's got a sick kid to take care of and didn't mean to turn to crime. But when given the powers to dematerialize and reform as weapons of mass destruction, he kind of uses his strength for evil. Actor Thomas Haden Church indicated maybe we shouldn't feel too sorry for him.

"He's really corrupted by the ferocity of his own good intentions," said Church. "You've got to pretty much figure that whenever I become a sand tornado and I'm spinning through the streets of Manhattan and flipping over cars, some people probably got f***ed up. That's probably a drag and they don't care if my daughter is dying because their car got turned upside down, their Hyundai Excel."

Then Church started to see the silver lining. "They don't even see the hidden benefit that insurance pays and they get another car."

Of course, flipping over a car could lead to more fatal results. "In which case their family collects death benefits, huh? They go party in Cabo. Damn! I am all about Sandman, ya'll!"

As an aside, I do sort of have issues with Raimi's need to have every villian in the Spidey movies be good people at heart. Some people are just born pure evil. Both of my sisters, for example.

Heh. Well, if you think about it most of the villains weren't good people at heart. The Green Goblin(s), Doctor Octopus, Venom aren't good people. Maybe they started out as good (or not so bad), but that changed. None of them have good reasons for the carnage they cause. Really the Sandman is the first who has a noble cause, even if his methods are far from. Green Goblin was fueled by narcissism and greed, Doc Oc by a crazy ego trip, Green Goblin 2 by misguided revenge, and Venom by jealousy and rage. None of these are noble emotions.

Making things black and white, good vs evil works in comic books, but on screen you need a little more depth then "he is good/he is bad." When you see a good person go bad for a good reason it has a dramatic effect, because on one hand you understand what they are going through, but on the other what they are doing is bad. Kinda emphasized the whole "everybody has a little darkness in the heart" thing. Sometimes people succumb to that darkness in the right (or wrong) conditions.

While Raimi and Koepp's characterization of Green Goblin was pretty on the mark (the design though... jesus), I can't stand what they did to Doc Ock. The tenticles talking to him? The accident damaged his brain, not some "inhibitor chip" or whatever the hell it was. The whole weepy "I will not die a monster" thing was garbage.

I have to disagree - while Octavius almost destroyed the city fueled by his foolish pride, he sacrificed himself in the end to correct his own mistake. Although the Goblin was essentially a bad person, he still cared about his son.

Like, it's in the fashion to blame Christians since that Dan Brown crap novel and crappier movie, with the crappiest Tom Hanks ever allowed on celluloid...
