WB Grabs Another Hot Frank Miller Title
by Scott Weinberg | May 02, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
With "300" in the rear-view mirror, but not before snagging more than $430 million in worldwide box office, Warner Bros. is hungry for another Frank Miller project. And now they have one...

Yep, Miller fans, it looks like the author's "Ronin" is finally going to become a big-screen action flick sooner than later. The studio has hired Sylvain White to direct the movie, a filmmaker you might remember from "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer" or, more likely, "Stomp the Yard."

Sources indicate that the project will be similarly budgeted to "300," and also that it will be lensed pretty much the same way: Hyper-stylized with digitally-constructed backgrounds and such. The story's about a 13th century Samurai who battles all sorts of evil in 21st century New York.

No word yet on who'll be writing the adaptation (or starring in the flick), but this news should be enough to keep the Miller faithful chatting away for quite some time. (And I'm wondering if WB will want a title change, since there's already a movie called "Ronin.")

Ronin is my personal favorite Miller book, and they hired that guy to direct it? Oh god...this isn't going to end well.

I'm thinking that the studio needs to rethink their choice of director and fast. There's no way it's going to turn out well unless they get someone else.

There was 2nd sequel? People watched it? Was it straight to dvd or something?

And Stomp the Yard? Wow, I had a buzz for another Miller adaptation.... But not anymore.

And of course they should keep the Original title!

Ronin is an awesome book, and I've been wondering for awhile when it was going to come out.
I'm not too sure about the director either, though...

I'm not only depressed by the choice in director, but the cynical decision to lens the film the exact same way. Although that explains the need for a hack director . . .

Studios still haven't realized that a unique idea or style is always cool the first time . . .

. . . Not so much the next. This same thing happened with Bullet-time.

As much as I was eager to see 300 for it's visuals(as I was to see "Hero"), I'm more interested in a good, well-written story. I enjoyed Sin City, but the trailers for 300 made it look juvenile(like the meagerly-drawn, poorly-written graphic novel . . . which I guess one could argue is actually a form of integrity to the source material).

Yeah, this is easily an abysmally dumb choice of directors. And if they'll make this dumb a decision this early on, imagine what they'll have done by the time it's all packaged and distributed.

Ronin is not a good story
This is proof that studios don't read books they just look at the name.
Ronin was a terrible book, I purchased it and gave it 2 or 3 reads really trying to like the book but alas the story itself was poor. While not is worst work (DK2 is his worst!) this book is not movie worthy, if anything I hope that they can change the story to make it better.

WTF?
From the director of "Stomp The Yard"? WB is either fucking around with us fans or they've gone completely insane. I say they should get Zack Snyder to direct "Ronin"...

Doesn't Miller have some kind of say in who gets to direct his movies? WTF. Where's the petition...

"Hey, that 300 movie made good money. Lets do the same thing again but spend less money, and hire people who are cheap, and just want to get paid. Then we'll do a bunch of internet marketing, and not screen it for critics. YAY!"

....Ughhh, I hope this turns out better than it sounds.

Elaborate please. Exactly how did he screw up 300? Story additions aside (which were the script's responsibility) I thought he did an exellent job adapting the novel to screen. Not to mention his Dawn of the Dead was one of the better recent remakes.

Cool Movie Voice Over Guy:
From the director who brought you "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Stomp the Yard" brings you Frank Miller's "Ronin".

Ha, ha, ha, ha....

Okay... somebody stop this. I see this being basically the same movie as 300... An hour and a half of fighting and 20 minutes of story. 300 had the impact that it did because it was unique. While I really enjoyed 300, it severely lacked in the "interesting things happening" department. I just don't think I could sit through another movie with the same formula no matter how good the visual effects are. I happen to think that a lot 300 fans will feel the same way I do and just sit this one out. But who knows? Could be good.
