The Rock as Captain Marvel?
From the "strange but (possibly) true" department. Director Peter Segal looks like he'll be directing the "Shazam" movie ... and will he be casting Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the lead role?
According to one source, Mr. Rock (who recently got done working with Peter Segal on "Get Smart") has discussed the idea of playing Captain Marvel: "Listen, John August is writing the script and he's a tremendous writer, and I'll just wait for the script to come in. But I'd love to work with Pete again, and certainly would want to work with John August. So there's a strong possibility."
The DC comic is about a kid who morphs into a mega-powerful super-hero after uttering a magic word. Segal's previous films include "The Longest Yard," "The Klumps," and "Tommy Boy." John August you'll no doubt remember from "Big Fish," "Corpse Bride," and "Charlie's Angels."

on May 11 2007 05:13 AM Well, they originally wanted to go with Captain African-Canadian-Samoan Man, but it didn't have the same appeal. ... not that a movie about Captain Marvel appeals to me at all. (Reply to this) |

on May 11 2007 05:28 AM Please No! The Rock cant act his way out of a paperbag! Captain Marvel needs a respected actor like, Christian Bale in Batman or Ed Norton in the Hulk. Captain Marvel has the potential to be a great movie...Please, Please, Please dont ruin it. How about Jake Gyllenhall as Captain Marvel? (Reply to this) |

on May 11 2007 05:44 AM In reply to this comment (#864930) Jake would be terrible i think... but i do agree that the Rock sucks. This movie will be the next Catwoman. (Reply to this) |

on May 11 2007 06:18 AM i'm sorry but WHY would an established actor want this role? gyllenhall? yeah right. look at the pic. it looks like norm macdonald wearing a blankie as a cape and his grandma's blouse as a shirt. this looks like a joke of a "superhero"...you're lucky the rock is considering it. actually, it reminds me of the white version of Blankman. get over it comic nerds, this will flop and you know it (Reply to this) |

![]() on May 11 2007 06:32 AM This is Sweet! Wasn't there some article a month or two ago, about Gyllenhaal as Capt. Marvel? I hope they cast The Rock, so Gyllenhaal will still be available for the next Spidey movie. I see this as a step closer to a new Peter Parker, folks. (Reply to this) |

on May 11 2007 06:36 AM "Well, they originally wanted to go with Captain African-Canadian-Samoan Man, but it didn't have the same appeal. " Actually, The Rock's father is Canadian, but he was born and raised in CA. I don't know if he has dual citizenship; there was no mention on Wiikipedia. (Reply to this) |
![]() on May 11 2007 07:31 AM Aw, hell no. What a way to ruin a classic character. And this director is Schumaker light. (Reply to this) |

on May 11 2007 08:32 AM Seems whenever there is an open role for something superhero-related everyone always wants Jakes friggin' Gyllenhaal. (Reply to this) |

on May 11 2007 08:59 AM Useless trivia: The Captain Marvel character was drawn to resemble actor Fred McMurray. (Reply to this) |

on May 11 2007 09:07 AM i know captain marvel was once a rival to superman as the most famous comic book hero, but that was in the 1800s. captain marvel is just a lame superhero, and it would come across even lamer on screen, even if you had speilberg directing. besides, no respected actor would take this role, unless they paid him a billion bucks. case in point, the rock. (who is a much better actor than people give him credit for) (Reply to this) |
|
on May 11 2007 09:57 AM In reply to this comment (#864938) well then, let's just exhume Fred's corpse and zap him with a few thousand volts. or if they're too cheap to use the electricity, they could make "Weekend at Captain Marvel's". think of the high-jinks with Fred McMurray's corpse! (Reply to this) |

on May 11 2007 10:28 AM In reply to this comment (#864940) I'm liking this idea! Billy Batson yells "SHAZAM!" and the lightning flashes from the sky to reveal... ...the dessicated corpse of Fred McMurray dressed in the bright red and gold (with that dorky white half-cape) costume of Captain Marvel! And in the background, the soft strains of the theme from My Three Sons plays in the background. (Reply to this) |
