Will Scarecrow Return to Haunt "The Dark Knight"?

Hey "Batman" fans? Were you hoping to see more of Cillian Murphy in the "Batman Begins" sequel? Then here's something you might want to read...

According to a pair of sources, it looks like Mr. Murphy will indeed be reprising his villainous role in "The Dark Knight." Obviously we don't know how big a part this character will play in Part 2, but he was pretty damn creepy in the first flick, so I call this good news indeed ... if it's true.

Further scuttlebutt indicates that Maggie Gyllenhaal will have more to do in "The Dark Knight" than Katie Holmes did in "Begins." Again, fine with me.

"he is creepy in the first film" ??? the scarecrow is creepy in the animated series, very creepy, but hes not a fifht as creepy in the film, a total waste of the character. But cyllian is good, I hope they make him creepier this time. I guess they are too afraid of making it too dark, but i do hope that even if he does not play a big part, that they make those scarecrow parts actually scary...

I don't think 'fear of making it too dark' is an assessment that can be assigned to this new franchise, zooman. And I disagree that Scarecrow was a waste. He fit right in, and isn't necessarily a flagship villain anyway. You're right though, Murphy's awesome in the role. But if he's gonna be in this one it'll be an even better fit for this sequel to have him show up for an even creepier turn.

Scarecrow makes two. Harvey Dent, if he's in the movie, isn't gonna be a villan until the third one, by the time the planet will be renamed "Gotham City".

actually, its 3. joker, scarecrow...and eric roberts' character. other than losing Holmes(thanks Tom...greedy b3stard) this series really can't do any wrong with Bale at the helm. i thought murphy was better than any of the bad guys in the first film so if he is coming back, thats good news. i wouldn't hold your breath for him to last that long though, he's probably just in there to keep things flowing from film to film.

Most of the supervillians that will now plague Gotham city are a result of the insane asylum patients being permannently messed up because of the toxic stuff released there. The scarecrow was technically not in the first film until the very end when he appeared on horseback. The scary bag mask will probably be fused to his face permannently too, after Katie's character burnt him.

It is? I said all that mainly because of the guy who said Scarecrow wasn't as scary as he could be - we have yet to see the full-fleged Scarecrow IMO. I thought it was all pretty obvious from the first movie?? It's why I have so much admiration for the thought C. Nolan puts in his films - there are so many tiny little details you pass over on a first viewing only to notice later. Just look at his film catalogue so far: The Prestige, Memento and Batman Begins... they're all like complicated puzzles, and I personally think Mr Nolan's head must be about to explode.

In terms of Batman, because it's a series and not a one off film like the others, you can already see him planting the seeds for things that may (or may not) happen in the future - such as the kid that'll almost certainly turn out to be Robin should they ever decide to include him in the series. It just all ties together so perfectly. It also leaves the door open should the movie's creators wish to wait and see how fans react or what they sense people will want included later on.

It feels forced when a character you've never heard of or witnessed before simply appears in a sequel for the sake of a new story. With 'Batman Begins' and probably 'The Dark Night' it seems they're introducing as many of the characters as possible early on (even in the shortest of scenes). Everything seems like it'll be connected well enough so that it all feels more like a saga (of Star Wars proportions perhaps?) rather than a bunch of stand alone films with interesting stories. Hopefully, when C. Nolan has finished with his Batman movies, they'll have this really "organic" feel and going back to watch the first in the series will be fun since characters in later entries now mean far more to you. The Spiderman series has been doing it with the Lizard, but I think Batman is doing it far better.

i dont know about nolan, but bale has definately stated that he wants no part of a batman movie that includes robin. i remember him saying something like "hopefully my time is over before they decide to introduce robin". and he's right, the movies are about batman, but i think nolan could definately make an interesting story regarding robin and how he mirrors batman in some respects.

as for too many villains... seeing as we dont even know if scarecrow is in the movie, and we dont know what role eric roberts is playing, im fine with it. plus, we already know scarecrow so it doesnt take any screen time to introduce him, and we're free to focus on the joker. besides i dont really count roberts as a villain. if anything, they will just use him to show how gotham crime is moving away from gangsters and more to the "freaks"

Agreed; Robin there were many things that ruined B&R and BF, but not even plastic molded nipples can compare to Chris O'donnell as Robin. He should have no part in the Begins series.

There were 3 villains in Begins if you include Falcone, just as some of you are including Roberts' character in this one.

Not to mention that I think Nolan understands that these movies should be about Batman wrestling with his personal demons and that the villains are merely a way of expressing that.

They should take a page out of the comics and have scarecrow and joker team up , and then have scarecrow turn on the joker and spray with fear toxin, only to discover it has not effect on the Joker. Then Joker can do what he did in the comics and beat scarecrow nearly to death with a chair, or other funny prop.

Sounds like Nolan isn't taking the "Introduce a villain, kill them off. Next film: introduce a villain, kill them off. Repeat ad nauseum." approach. Thank god, there's so much potential for building drama and a hero/nemesis relationship over the course of several films that a lot of superhero movies don't take advantage of because they follow that pattern.
