Joel Silver Taking Over "He-Man" Movie?
by Scott Weinberg | May 20, 2007
Discuss Article | Blog Article | Email To A Friend
For a while there it looked like John Woo was going to direct a new "Masters of the Universe" movie, but that's just nutty. Producer Joel Silver, on the other hand...

...now that seems to make more sense. AICN is reporting that Joel Silver will be producing the "He-Man" flick, if it ever gets through the door at Warner Bros., that is. Word is that newcomer screenwriter Justin Marks has been tapped to write the script. Marks also has the "Green Arrow in Prison" project "Super Max" on his plate, with titles like "Voltron" and "Street Fighter" on the back burner. Busy guy.

Right about here is where I'd usually make a sarcastic comment about that OTHER "Masters of the Universe" movie, but I figure I'd open the floor to the commenters. Anyone?

Sounds like a kennel of dogs in Silver's future.

I'm all about a Green Arrow movie -- but Prison? How's he gonna get a bow and his trick arrows in prison?

As for He-Man, well, c'mon -- they cannot possibly do worse than the first movie. Really. Seriously. No way it could be worse. Right?

How bout they DON'T make a movie. How many people (besides chicks) would go to a movie where the hero is in nothing but a small pair of underwear through the entire flick...I'm sure guys would try...but around their friends...they'd feel uncomfertable. This is already a HUGE fiasco.

you mean guys aren't secure enough with their sexuality to watch he-man? i mean...i wouldn't see this, because it obviously will suck, not because i'm afraid of my friends calling me gay.

I think plenty of guys loved 300 which was mostly a bunch of He-men look alikes running around in their underwear...although I guess they had capes and helmets...so I don't think Brokebackyoda has much of an argument there.
And as a child of the eighties I would love to see a big fun He-Man movie. Just as I sit and wait for Transformers.

homophobic much?
We need to start a Straight Men Who Would Watch A Shirtless He-MAN with Nothing But A Pair of Underwear (and btw not gay) club!

Yeah, I'm not sure how that one got past the filter. If we could tolerate 300 like dressed warriors, we can tolerate one. Muscles don't bother heterosexual men. Not unless they're not really heterosexual men, if you get my drift.
What matters in regards to this film is that they get the story right and (please, oh please) don't try to rehash that ridiculous time travel plot. But the real question is, post 300, which will be a better film rendition: He-Man, or God of War?

Adam vs. Kratos?

I saw conan and didn't feel gay...I saw 300 and didn't feel gay...I was a he-man fan as a kid...and I don't feel gay...so if I see it I will probably not feel gay either... I don't know what direction they're going to take with this movie....but a green tiger that doubles its size will just look silly in live action...

they're making a god of war movie? cool...there's always hope for that video game-to-movie to be a good one!

The only cartoon that makes me feel gay is Thundercats.

Yeah, it's in the works. I can't wait to see who they get to play Kratos. And if they model either LOTR or 300 with the designs then it could be pretty explosive. I always thought something could have been done with the Legend of Zelda series if someone like Jackson or del Toro were to snag it. Maybe there will be hope if Kratos leads the ship with a successful box office.

he man, street fighter, voltron, super max. all could be quite entertaining movies if done right. if i had to bet, i'd say they all come out smelling like turd sandwiches. but one can hope cant he? who knows is this new writer, but he better do some good stuff, or my eight year old self will kill him

What I am saying is... a lot of people that don't go to forums and talk about movies don't wanna go see a guy in his underwear. The audience that doesn't follow movies I guess. I myself am not homophobic, but a LOT of people are. And there is a difference between guys in the army in ancient sparta, fighting and killing men, than he-man running around running around. haha i guess a lot of people in the republican states. For example, I live in a huge republican state and i knoew a lot of peope that won't see superman or any of those movies because they think that they are gay. and I agree with MadmanCody, it will probably suck anyways.

Could there be a more true representation of He-Man than the 1987 film? Really? I kind of thought that summed it up. Was there something else to say?

There's no way to make He-Man that isn't ridiculous, so why not just make a nice DVD of the old one. When I was 5, I saw it in the theatre and it was awesome. What more was it supposed to do?

"He-man running around running around.." lol. Priceless. But I disagree with your speculation about a He-Man movie. The only thing that'll sink it is bad writing and horrible production value. The homophobes can stay home. We're not talking to them anyway... But if people can tolerate 300 near naked warriors on the big screen, then I think it's safe to say that people can tolerate one. I said it before; muscles don't bother heterosexual men, not unless they're hiding something.
It's not really speculative to assume such a project could work either. Look at Conan and Beast Master. They're perfect models for a He-Man movie. Imagine either of these guys in a LOTR setting, superbly rendered locales, menacing villains, giant monsters and mythical creatures, a badass Skelator, and a super barbarian warrior with an awesome magical sword. If done passionately, a He-Man movie would be a slam dunk. But, yeah.... it'll probably suck. But one can dream.

I guess your right. They'd probably put in some chick for him to make sweet love to...like they did with Conan...haha but conan sucked.

Of course. Her name is Teela. And they'll no doubt make the sorceress of castle Grayscull an exotic hottie as well. It has all the earmarks of a great franchise starter. It certainly inspires more interest than that whole 'Tintin' project that Jackson and Spielberg are doing. (feh)
