Release Dates Set for "Shrek 4" and "Shrek 5"
Well, release years anyway, according to Jeffrey Katzenberg.
"The fourth film will come out in 2010 and the fifth in 2013," is what Katzenberg told an Australian newspaper while he was down under introducing "Shrek the Third" to another continent.
This should come as no surprise to anyone: All three of the "Shrek" flicks have been monster hits at the box office. (Good to know we still have three more years till the next one, though.) Perhaps someone can spend part of the next three years writing a better screenplay than the last one.

Also on tap from DreamWorks Animation are "Bee Movie," "Kung Fu Panda," and a sequel to "Madagascar." (Hey, why not a sequel to "Over the Hedge"? I really liked that one.)

on Jun 07 2007 05:44 AM Too early to plan sequels for an underwhelming 3rd Yes, for God's sakes, spend more time on the screenplay and put some better jokes in Shrek 4. And a better director, some of the jokes fell flat, more because of the timing and how they were presented, than how they were written. B/c Adam Adamson is out doing Narnia, we got stuck with a second-rate director for this third Shrek, and paid for it. (Reply to this) |

on Jun 07 2007 06:27 AM I didn't see Shrek 3 but the second was overrated. I was rather disspointed. I liked the First. The problem is there are too many references and too many characters no one cares about. The princessses..... Puss N Boots....Merlin......Too many new characters and you really have to focus on the old ones...And Artie? ........You know if Pirates brought back Barbosa why can't they bring back Fraquad?......At the DVD Farquad was swalled but still alive at Shrek 4-D he was a Ghost.....He was a great villian bring him back (Reply to this) |

on Jun 07 2007 06:41 AM I think that the big problem with Shrek 3 was that the villian was weak, the 'hero' - Arthur, was weak. Heck even Shrek was weak and sad, SOB SOB SOB. All together now: "Feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelllllings, nothing wrong with Feeeeellings." ARGH! Only the women were strong and kicked butt! The biggest LOL was Snow White kicking guards. (Reply to this) |

on Jun 07 2007 08:46 AM I enjoyed the first Shrek but I agree Over the Hedge is the best of their animated films since. Forget Madagasgar, that thing stunk the first time. (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jun 07 2007 10:02 AM The first Shrek was good because the creators of the movie had a great story that they struggled to get approved, and worked hard to make it a quality production. The second Shrek was pretty good because they had the format down but they didn't have as good a story. It was easier to get approved since they had succeeded with Shrek 1. How could the producers say no? Shrek 3 was weak because now the creators could do whatever they want. They could get any story approved and spend all the money they want. However, the cast and crew are tired of doing it, and the creative energy is gone. Shreks 4 and 5 are going to be terrible because Shrek is becoming like a TV series now, with junk scripts, third-rate direction and a cast that will be leaving, at least emotionally, because the magic of doing the great cartoon that was Shrek is gone. The producers should make Shrek a TV show, because that is the only quality we will ever see from it from now on. That is the reason behind the trilogy curse. You work hard on the first one, you work hard on the second one with weaker material, and by the third you're just plain burn out. Beyond that, you just don't care any more. Shrek is all about the money now. The energy is gone. The producers need to lower their expectations and just go TV, IMO. (Reply to this) |

on Jun 07 2007 10:22 AM In reply to this comment (#868285) If I had any poo, I'd fling it at you now...Madagascar was just as funny if not funnier than Over the Hedge. Although the argument is moot since Pixar is clearly kicking every other studios azz in this genre. (Reply to this) |

on Jun 07 2007 10:58 AM Sad but true.. Here's my theory-- Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz were still hot'n'heavy when this was being conceived, and since everbody producing knew they were gonna make another sequel, anyway, Cam pretty easily got 'her mans' a part in the movie. Because this was the barest rank nepotism (and yes, before the *scholars* among us start squealing: I know 'nepotism' actually refers to family-- way to miss the point), they didn't really have an idea of what to do with him, and consequently they half-assed a rather unnecessary and completely uninspired character: Uninspired, you say? lemme' 'splain: Mike Myers, a rather short, unimposing (though charasmatic) white Canadian man plays an ugly, Lumbering OGRE with a celtic accent (bizarre!) Eddie Murphy, a generally (formerly?) hip, smooth-talking black man plays a socially inept and clumsy DONKEY (clever!) Antonio Banderas, a suave, chiseled, leading-man Spaniard plays a tiny warrior cat that gets by purely on adorability. And licks its balls. (classic!) ...Justin Timberlake, a young, boyishly-handsome white man plays a young, boyishly handsome white BOY ..who starts off a little awkward. (push the envelope guys. push the envelope) Somebody gonna tell me this was part of the creative plan all along? ...Finally, to compound problems, JT and CD also broke up sometime during production, filling the studio with all sorts of bad mojo. All of this resulted in --compared to its predecessors at least-- a clearly mediocre movie. Ahh. I feel vented. I may now rest until needed again... (Reply to this) |
![]() on Jun 07 2007 11:42 AM Imo: Shrek 1 was great. Shrek 2 was great. Shrek 3 was fair. Over The Hedge should not have a sequel because it was a slightly above average movie and not worth having a sequel to. There is no reason to have one. What would the plot be? By the time Shrek 5 comes out, I will be driving my future car to my future college and hanging with my future friends and possibly future girlfriend. In other words, it will be a very long time before I get to see Shrek 5 and I can't see why they're telling us SIX YEARS in advance. Madagascar should not have a sequel because it was a terrible movie. There actually is room for one, given the ending, but unless it can actually find a plot and some character development, it shouldn't happen. (Reply to this) |

![]() on Jun 07 2007 02:33 PM wow...thats not very exciting. I think they should end this franchise and start a new, cool one...they have the talent, they should use it. I think 4 will be a rude awakening, they'll soon realize that the franchise is falling, and when it underpeforms, (like 3rd is now) they'll soon realize that it's time to let Shrek enjoy his poplularity and rest in peace. New franchise, imo (Reply to this) |

on Jun 07 2007 03:56 PM tired of animated movies by now, but shrek is safe Shrek is one of the most decent franchises, so instead of more madagascars and over the hedges and open seasons, Im open for more, and hopefully better Shreks. I am not a big fan about the decent first one, but I liked the second one because it could play with the characters we knew and it had more jokes and was fast paced. Haven't seen the third one but I might. Kind of hoping Surfs up is at least funnier and mainly more engaging than say Madagascar or over the hedge. But i guess in general I have pretty much given up with animated flicks that are not from Pixar, whic are the only ones I really wait excitedly for. There have been so many HORRIBLE animated ones (Shark's Tale first and foremost, Doogal, The Wild, Meet the Robinsons), bad ones (Happy Feet, Robots), and so many average flicks that are getting boring by now (Ice Ages, Over the Hedge, Madagascar, Open Season). Monster House would have been a better live action film, say like a new Jumanji. Chicken Run/Wallace are ok but a bit boring for me as to want to go see them on theaters. For some reason I did enjoy Chicken Little, but I think Im alone on that and well that one movie among many bad ones isnt enough for me to be expectant from non pixar animated films. So if its gonna be a non pixar animated one, I think its safer to keep on going wiht Shreks. (I am still very curious about the digital/hand-drawn disney musical though, can only hope for the best) (Reply to this) |

on Jun 07 2007 04:00 PM In reply to this comment (#868295) Agreed. Shrek was great because it was fresh, funny and original. Same with Shrek 2. But Shrek 3 was just plain a plain dissapointment. It was funny but not holy original, having too many purposefully bad jokes and while the series did a great job of perfecting toilet humor, Shrek 3 was just unoriginal and did nothing for the style of humor. There should be a new series, one that literally sparkles with originality and fun. Over The Hedge was fun and original, but I can't see a sequel. Madagascar wasn't terrible but they just shouldn't make a sequel it. (Reply to this) |
