"Pink Panther" is Coming Back With a New Director

You knew it was coming: Steve Martin in a "Pink Panther" sequel.

Although we expected Shawn Levy to return as director, it looks like he'll stay on as a producer and hein the helm over to Harald Zwart, also known as the director of "Agent Cody Banks" and "One Night at McCools."

Steve Martin will be returning to play Inspector Clouseau. The sequel's screenplay comes from Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber, with a rewrite by comedy veterans Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel.

Sony is aiming to get "The Pink Panther 2" (or whatever they'll be calling it) into production by late August.

wow they seem to have actually got someone worse then Levy. Pink Panther was a horrendous film with one funny joke (I would like to have a umburgar!) that made me laugh once...for 7 seconds and then I was quite again....until I started groaning again every time they tried another unfunny joke.

How sad that Steve Martin's career has fallen so far that he's making yet another stinker. The man who in the late 70's and early 80's was on the leading edge of comedy, has sadly sunken to the depths of schlock. Money can make a whore out of anyone, I guess..

Sadly the thing that made the original Pink Panther so classic died with Peter Sellers. Martin tries, but it's next to impossible to try to walk in the footsteps of a giant. I'd like to see Steve do his own thing again. Maybe The Jerk II.

At first, I was excited about Zwart's involvment. I thought it would be somewhat more mature, since he directed One Night at McCool's. Then I remembered One Night at McCool's sucked and that he ALSO directed Agent Cody Banks.

This is one of those sequels like the Garfield one. There is no justification for it, but apparently someone wants to make it. For profit? Not likely. Probably just for fun.

Maybe I'll watch it On Demand or something.

I actually liked Steve Martin's take on the character and while I like Peter Sellers I wouldn't say he is a giant of comedy. Steve Martin's career is equally brilliant if not better in my opinion. Believe it or not, I was hoping they would make another one, if only to improve upon the last one which I thought was really funny.

the first film sucked....... they were trying to make it too much like Austin Powers in my opinion....... Steve Martin needs to be funny again but comedians have trouble doing that nowadays (Robin Williams and Eddie Murphy for example)...... overall we don't need a sequel to such a remake like this..... they should just say "okay well guys we just made a really bad movie now we need to spend the next ten years creating the most original movie ever that will blow people away with absolutely no sequels"........ but i would be amazed to hear that in Hollywood so whatever.

I agree, wasn't trying to denigrate Martin, but Peter Sellers defined this role. If Peter Sellers was still alive and tried to do the man with two brains or the Jerk. I'd probably be saying the same thing about him. Watch the originals again and Doctor Strangelove and tell me Sellers isn't a comedic genius. The same could be said for Martin, but trying to follow in someone elses footsteps when they've already done such a fantastic job is an invitation to failure as I think the Pink Panther and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory showed us. Again not bagging on Johnny Depp, I think he's a brilliant actor, he just paled in comparison with Gene Wilder in that particular role. Both he and Martin made admirable attempts, but were I think doomed to failure from the start. Heck even George Lucas couldn't follow in his own footsteps and recapture the glory of the original Star Wars. I think it's probably because after time there's so much nostalgia value and it's built up so big in our heads that it's impossible to catch that lightning in a bottle again.

I honestly don't see why Pink Panther gets so much hate. My guess is most people didn't see it. There were a number of moments of subtle verbal humor ("Are you lonely?" "Not since the internet." to name one) that alone make it better than 90% of the remakes out there. I mean I'd pick Pink Panther 2 any day before Daddy Day Camp.
