Sam Jackson as Nick Fury in "Iron Man"?
by Scott Weinberg | June 22, 2007
Discuss Article
As if I weren't already geeked out enough over next summer's "Iron Man," now comes a very cool piece of gossip / early news...

As AICN points out, the pieces seem to be (slowly) coming together on an "Avengers" movie. They're reporting that none other than Samuel L. Jackson will have a small role in "Iron Man" -- and he'll be playing war hero turned superspy Nick Fury.

No word yet on if this'll lead directly to a spin-off or future Fury appearances in other Marvel films, but I've come to the conclusion that having Marvel run their own movie division is a really cool idea!

If this turns out to be an accurate report, Mr. Jackson would be joining a cast that already includes Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, and Jeff Bridges. Not bad at all...

By the way... this is the kinda thing I pictured Sam doing for some time... at least he's not some second rate superhero like Black Bolt or anything...

(though now that I think of it.. that^^ could be entertaining... hmmm you know what I mean)

Oh man this is awesome news... I thought the Ultimate version of Nick Fury turned the character from a corny lame character to a badass motherf***er... it was obviously inspired by Sam J. This movie is gonna rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're showing your age if you think that Nick Fury was a corny lame character, junior. And if you want to see him at his badassed best, just track down Garth Ennis' take on Fury's original (i.e. pre-ULtimate) incarnation. That said, I don't mind the Ultimate take on Fury in the least, and I think Sammy J. is a great choice to play him.

Don't care much for Jackson as Nick Fury at all. Let's just hope he doesn't play Sgt. Rock too.

I just don't like black actors playing white characters, and vice versa.

in the ultimates, nick fury suggests he should be played by samuel l jackson, so i wouldnt exactly call it inspired casting. hopefully he doesnt bring his character from XXX to the iron man set.

although his line "a small price to pay so i can put foot to ass for my country" was great.

nick fury isnt black.
yes. nick fury is a white devil.
although samuel l jackson is the shit, and even if it is a short cameo.
nick fury isnt black.
its like in batman returns ala harvey dent.

why not go a step further and bring out the big guns?
SAMUEL JACKSON = BLACK PANTHER
after all, its big names that sell.
and am i the only one tired of hollywood shitting on graphic novel legends? twisting perfectly good characters so we have another big name in an already action figure fueled marvel movie?
its in the marketing, not the movie's actual quality.
jon favreau better not screw iron man up like so many other marvel heroes gone to waste for a quick buck (daredevil. enough said.)

after all, little ass kids dont care, theyll but the action figure either way.
we care, we actually pay attention.

Sam Jackson? wow. it just keeps getting better and better. if he's in the Avengers movie, marvel is never going to need studio backing for a movie ever again.

I don't like the Ultimate spin-offs and hence don't like the idea of Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury. I love Samuel Jackson, but not as Nick Fury, he would make a good Cloak however.

Very true. Ennis' book on Fury was great; Hell, the old 60's Steranko stuff was great too, but it's still cool to see Jackson playing him.

I have yet to see a comic book movie which I watch continually over and over besides (guess which one) Batman Begins.

I think it needs more than action and good story it needs to visually feel right and the dialog should be good enough to bring people back.

SpiderMan 1,2,3 - Exhausting to watch over again, especially 3 which sucked
Superman Returns - Ugh, couldnt even stand it the first time I watched it
Daredevil - Good enough for HBO
Fantastic Four 1 and 2 - 1 sucked cause it was 2 hours for a 5 min fight. The second was good but too much annoying dialog to return to
So forth and so on you get it.

You must have missed the episode right before ultimates where Fury got a negroplasty like Kyle off of South Park :)

I've never thought of Sam L. Jackson as a actor (except for Pulp Fiction), he just has a screen presence that kicks ass. Think it will work great.
