Potential Plot(s) for "Pirates 4"?
by Scott Weinberg | June 22, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
We just got done with "Pirates 3," which means we're ready to start jawing about ... "Pirates 4."

Don't hold your breath just yet, "Pirates" freaks. Odds are we won't be seeing another entry for at least a few years, but some sources indicate that they've gotten some inside buzz on potential plot-lines...

Take it all with a grain of salt, but here's what CinemaBlend is telling us:

1. Johnny Depp may receive up to $40 million for "Pirates 4."

2. Geoffrey Rush and Gore Verbinski are allegedly coming back.

3. The services of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley will no longer be needed.

4. In addition to the Fountain of Youth idea that was touched upon at the end of Part 3, here are some of the alternative story-lines that have been mentioned: giant flying machines, the most dangerous pirate of all, and a trip to Atlantis.

We shall see.

"The services of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley will no longer be needed."

Well that'll give it a 10% Tomatometer bump right there.

That's what I was wondering. I WISH it were only $5. Try doubling that.

Hmmmmmmmm... I think it could work out if they didn't actually show Jack going to the Fountain of Youth, but start with a completely different story that he plays into.

Did they not learn that they peaked with 2? Another one is like beating a dead horse. Had the third one made more money than the 2nd, I could understand. The third will struggle to reach $300 domestically, let alone $400 like the 2nd. I know that it still made a bunch of money, but still......

given the history of this franchise you'll likely see all four of those plots crammed into the same movie.

Pirates 3 was ok. Not great, not really that bad, but not too good either. Let it die.

i'd be in you cant really compare it to the 2 or 3 (which i didnt hate 2 and i enjoyed 3 a lot) because that was the same movie if they did it right i mean come on a trip to Atlantis...fountain of youth... and jack sparrow could be pretty sweet especially now that you wouldn't have a will or Elizabeth turner...i didn't hate them like some people did but i think it could be fresh again.

Never meant to be franchise
PotC was a suprise hit. Or perhaps they expected it to be a hit in the way that many movies own the box office for a spell, but have no lasting (pop) cultural impact. But what happened was definitely the latter. It seems like everyone who worked on the original was there to have fun, but weren't really taking notes. Their frantic desperation to parrot (no pun intended) that magic in both lifeless, ludicrous sequels demonstrates that even they didn't grasp what they made or why it worked.

Now they're going to make MORE of them... A great way to make a billion dollars, sure.

I don't think it was supposed to be a huge thing either. I remember seeing it I think the weekend it came out, and the theater was pretty packed, but it wasn't for a week or two afterwards before everyone started their love affair with Jack.

The ideas for the forth sequel sound promising, a lot better than the second and third movies. More Rush and Depp is very good. No Bloom and Knightley is even better. And yes, Gore Verbinski has to come back!

"Seems it's been a while...
...since we've done any honest pirating."

How about this... they tone down the "epic" plotlines and get back to PIRACY. Concentrate more on the fact that Jack's a PIRATE and he loves the freedom of it. I love epic fantasy stories, don't get me wrong - I've written quite a few - but for movies, there's just not enough time to work in all the detail. So simplify. I enjoy the Pirates movies and I think there's a lot of intelligence in them (half the plot or more is told through subtle nuance that you don't get the first go through... or the second... or even the third), but c'mon already.

As to Will and Elizabeth's characters... I like them, they add a different flavor to the stories, but their tale seems to be more or less completed. So, if the writers can pull something together with Jack and Barbossa and simplify it a bit, yeah, I say, I'm all for another sequel. But if it's another over-complicated row like P3, I'll wait til it comes out on DVD and I can watch it as many times as I want (without forking over $5 to $12 each time) to wade through the plotlines.
