Marc Forster Shares First Thoughts On "Reinventing" James Bond
by Fred Topel | June 27, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Marc Forster was just announced as the director of the next James Bond movie and made his first public appearance at the Los Angeles Film Festival.

In a panel discussion with director Paul Haggis, Forster was there to share experiences with filmmakers. Though he seems like an unusual choice for a big action movie, it's something he's thought about for a long time.

"I always was fascinated with action films and I always loved them," said Forster. "I always wanted to do one and now with the reinvention of Daniel Craig and Mr. Haggis, I thought it could be an interesting journey."

After said reinvention, Forster plans to enjoy artistic freedom to make a Bond movie his way. "Obviously, this new one is not based on a book so there's quite a bit of freedom to it. It's just something I always wanted to do and it felt right. All my decisions are made purely based on instinct so especially after The Kite Runner, it was mostly subtitled, no stars, I thought it couldn't be a bigger opposite to that so I thought it would be a great collaboration with Paul and Daniel."

The James Bond team has a second unit that is well versed in 007 action, but Forster is planning to change that up too. "I'm probably going to work with a second unit director who hasn't worked with them before."

I think he'll do fine. Let's give the guy a fair chance and not immediately judge him.

Agreed. He could end up making the best bond film ever. You never know...

I like his directing, but his bringing in a new second unit director is a little scary. Those guys work well together and get the job done. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I had faith in casino royal before it came out, mainly because i didnt like Pierce brosnans bond. or the films. And Casino royal made me a fan.

I just hope they stick with the winning formula of it, Maybe time to introduce a cool gadget or two, maybe even give him a car as my only mild gripe with Royal was there was no car chase, but it didnt bother me because it was the new beginning of Bond and i knew that there would be plenty of time for that in the sequels.

Everything I've seen from this guy has been surprisingly good. I walked into Finding Neverland thinking, "oh god, this is going to suck" and I totally loved it. Stranger Than Fiction was also fantastic, and Monster's Ball, while not quite as good as the critics said, is still pretty good.

Though I don't think he's the greatest choice for an action movie, I have confidence that Forster won't ruin it.

Totally agree. I keep expecting this guy to disappoint me, but he hasn't yet. I am a little worried about replacing the second unit director, but who knows might be a gamble that pays off.

Although he hasn't yet proven his ability to make an action movie, he has proven himself to be a very versatile director so I have plenty of hope.

There was a car chase in casino royale, it was very short, but it sure had a great crash at the end. :)

I liked it because it took you by suprise.

Forster is good in every genre ('Stay' is his single near-miss). I can't imagine him screwing this up.

At the very least, it'll have and interesting premise.

If you want Forster to disappoint you, just watch "Next." The guy's not the second coming.

Also, Zach Helm's script for "Stranger than Fiction" was excellent, and it's fast, upbeat tone was whitewashed away by Forster's direction.

"Neverland" was inoffensive and cute, though. He just has a habit of taking hotly-discussed screenplays ("Next" and "Fiction") and then fumbling them. He may do the same with Bond.

I think he might
I hope he does not get rid of those guys that are well seasoned for dealing with another movie of 007. He needs all the exp. he can get. But i still might go see it anyway

Foster did not direct Next. What the heck are you talking about?
anyway I have no worries about the guy, I'm willingly to bet he makes a great Bond film.
but if I had my choice I would have just let the same guy who directed CR to do the next one. GoldenEye is probably my second favorite bond film after CR so I would have let the guy do one more. why I can't think of his name at the moment I don't know...

Sorry, it was late when I wrote this. I meant "Stay." Both are equally terrible, one is just fresher in most people's minds, including mine apparently.

If you think "Stranger than Fiction" is terrible, then I'm afraid you are in the minority.

Amen to that, Brother. I second that.

Make it anything except "artsy crap" like that horrible "Hulk" movie by Ang lee.
