According to Variety, Ms. Bigelow will begin production in Jordan and Kuwait next week. The story is about an army bomb squad that comes under fire in Baghdad. The fact-based (yet fictional) story comes from journalist Mark Boal, who once spent some time alongside such an "ordinance disposal team."
Although it's being touted as a topical and serious film, you can probably expect some high-end action as well. Kathryn Bigelow is the (underrated) director of Near Dark, Blue Steel, Strange Days, and K-19: The Widowmaker.
Here's what Mr. Boal has to say about the project: "The idea is that it's the first movie about the Iraq War that purports to show the experience of the soldiers ... We wanted to show the kinds of things that soldiers go through that you can't see on CNN, and I don't mean that in a censorship-conspiracy way. I just mean the news doesn't actually put photographers in with units that are this elite."
